If Big Ten teams were fast food restaurants

Surprisingly brilliant, especially Nebraska as sonic. Always wondered how in the heck sonic could thrive wasting ad dollars on me when I couldn't buy their product if I wanted to.

At some point it becomes more cost efficient to advertise nationally rather than locally across large parts of the country. It also makes the brand a national name, so when they expand into a new market they already have name recognition. I can recall seeing commercials for Lowe's for years before they were in this market. Once they arrived, pretty much everyone already knew who they were.

I love KFC, but it's unhealthy and will inevitably kill you.

Perfect comparison.

Not to say that other fast food isn't unhealthy too. Just that KFC is generally considered one of the more greasy, nasty options.

Same with Golden Corral

Aren't there two or three in the metro now?

Sure, but for a very long time they were advertising with absolutely no presence anywhere near the Twin Cities.

Sonic has been advertising in the Fargo/Moorhead area for a year or more now. They are finally opening one this fall in Fargo.

I'm just old enough to remember a Rax off of highway 13 in Burnsville, I think

There was one off of Division in St. Cloud. My biggest complaint about the article is that he calls Arby's terrible. Try the King's Hawaiin Roast Beef BLT and get back to me.

I'm very happy with that. Aside from popeyes, my favorite fast food is KFC

Here's the thing about KFC. Don't eat the " SKIN " !!!!, and you'll be fine. It like the people who spent a lifetime of eating the fatty portion of prime rib.....you die before your time.

The skin is the only reason to eat there.

U = Arnolds from Happy Days- hasnt been anything since Ike was in office.

As seldom as I have prime rib, I am gonna eat the god damned fatty part if I want.

Wisconsin has to be White Castle. ... people associate Whiteys with obnoxious drunks, and it gives ya' the sh*ts.

Funny, I kinda thought of the Gophers as being White Castle. They're mostly awful, but you get addicted to them and keep coming back for more. :drink:

I was surprised no Burger King. Thats like the second or third biggest one. DQ grill and chill, Jimmy Johns and Chipotle could have made it as well.

White Castle was the very first burger joint fast food chain while Rutgers played the very first intercollegiate football game with Princeton as well.

Bogus, lazy try without the king of all burgers since 1942.

In N Out.

Rax! That's a blast from the past. There used to be one up by Rosedale, if I remember correctly. I knew a Czech girl in college who nothing of American fast food before coming to the U. Strangely Rax was her favorite.

Yep, ate at both Burnsville and Roseville. Think the Burnsville one hung on longer. Good BBQ sandwich.

HA, awesome mention of Rax. I believe their slogan was "Fast Food with STYLE!" There was one in Bloomington by where the Red Lobster is and, ironically, Sonic is now.

What kind of cigarettes would the Gophers be? I'll go with Camel straights

Yup. I recall the Roseville Rax! location as well, I think it was still operating into the late 90s. I'll admit, I had a soft spot for this place as a kid (ate at one in Madison, WI a number of times growing up) - Uncle Alligator happy meals were infinitely cooler than that bozo red-headed clown.

Before I read this assignment of rather entertaining fast food analogs, I tried to guess a few teams - I did get Michigan as McDonalds, but had the Gophers as Burger King (still clinging to the fact that we're the home of the Whopper/7 National Titles, despite doing nothing for anyone lately, and even having the audacity to recently try serving bone-in ribs at a fast food joint/Tim Brewster).

I'm glad they pointed out that Wisconsin/Culvers being overpriced. Good food there, but Culvers people have a much higher sense of what it's worth than I do. Also, among the plethora of frozen custard options available in Wisconsin, Culvers is among the laziest in developing unique and appealing flavors of the day. Caramel cashew and Snickers once per week isn't cutting it.

Agreed. King's Hawaiian is the best fast food I've ever eaten.

I too remember Rax. We had one in the hood, Zane and West Broadway.

In N Out.

In N Out is quite possibly the most overrated fast food joint out there. Terrible fries and just a decent burger about the same quality as Wendy's

There was also a Rax on the west end of Anoka, on Highway 10 just west of Fairoak.
