I'm actually thinking this new stadium is going to be a reality, now that the final bill has passed both the MN House and Senate.

While not real fond of going to games at HHH, since I have been to San Antonio and St Louis the past 2 years for NCAA Regionals, I have realized modern domes aren't so bad for college hoops. Don't get me wrong, I prefer arenas but with this resolved hopefully Mpls will get put back in the Tourney rotation by 2018 or earlier.

How about this for the first basketball event, a triple header:

Iowa St vs UCLA
Marquette vs Missouri
Gophers vs North Carolina

All 6 Power Conferences represented with 3 schools in driving distance.

Basketball in a dome is fine if you bring your opera glasses.

When done right, they can be configured to where 20,000 - 25,000 can at least have a decent viewing experience. The other umteen thousand are probably better off viewing the gigantic HD scoreboard.

Midwest Regional

2017 Final Four

Prior to a Final 4, I'm sure they the new stadium would have a dry run by hosting the Midwest Regional. If Minnesota hosts as has been the case in the past they would not be eligible to play there.

A couple of ways to get around it would be:

Have the Big 10 be host.
Convince either NDSU or Northern Iowa to be the host.

The drawback would be Gopher season ticket holders would likely not get any priority to buying any tix.

Wait, in bball the Gophers can't go to that regional if they host? I forgot that rule from the last Dome region in 2006 (perhaps b/c it didn't matter...sigh). If true it's hilarious b/c hockey is the exact opposite (you get auto slotted in your regional if you host).

Is true. Believe it is the only NCAA sport like that., all the rest get to play at ahome.

The best bet to see the Gophers play an NCAA tournament game near this state is for NDSU to host a first/second round at the Fargodome. Otherwise, it's either Kansas City or Milwaukee.

I'd like to see the NCAA give Des Moines a shot on this next go around for bids. If Boise can host, so can Des Moines.

LOL - that's just stupid talk.

Please explain why you consider this so.

The Big Ten Conference isn't going to host any games outside of Chicago or Indy, much less at the New Dump. I highly doubt that NCAA games held there will be hosted by anyone other than the U.

Ope has a good point about the new arena in Des Moines, and I might give you SDSU in Sioux Falls. Otherwise, as I said originally, it's either NDSU in Fargo, Kansas City, Milwaukee, or Chicago when it's there.

If NDSU wanted, they might be able to bid for the new Dome site too. This year's Frozen Four was held in Tampa but the host was UAB. Then again, hockey can be an odd duck compared to bball (see above discussion on host team playing in own regional).
