Why has his name not been hotter? Young (36), midwest guy, got Valpo back to the NCAAs in his first 2 years at the helm. Recognizable name from his playing days. Comes from very successful coaching bloodlines - his bro Scott has done great work at Baylor and his dad was a great coach too.

Plus, he would be realistic and would likely jump at the chance to go B1G.

My guess would be that he's not a polished recruiter like his brother Scott. Yes, he competes with the big boys in Indiana (IU, Purdue, ND and Butler) but he has even struggled to get local kids from Valparaiso to attend. It's a glaring weakness. That said, he just lost 5 starting seniors and would jump at this opportunity.

But has he really had a chance to recruit with the big boys? I mean, it's Valpo. Calipari would have a hard time loading up the roster there.

Didn't he make the big shot when the astronaut was on the sidelines? ;)

Scott was the main recruiter at Valpo under Homer. Grabbed lots of foreign players and helped build the team. After Bryce returned from the NBA and Scott was at Baylor, Bryce took over recruiting for Homer. As a Valparaiso High School alum and local hero failed to land both Robbie Hummel (Purdue) and Scott Martin (Purdue-Notre Dame), who both were Valpo High School grads. Additionally, never landed anyone greater than 2 stars with the exception of 4 star recruit Jay Harris who transferred his sophomore year.

Did Scott beat Purdue quite a bit when he was coaching Valpo?

What is the overall impression of Scott Drew?

But we are talking Robbie Hummel, a guy who was all conference and got drafted in the NBA in spite of 2 ACL tears. Wouldn't you have picked Purdue too? It's like ripping Bill Carmody for losing Jabari Parker to Duke.

Scott only coached Valpo for 1 year before Baylor hired him away. That said, Valpo has only played Purdue a few times in the past few decades and never won.

Scott had a huge ego when I attended Valpo and wasnt well liked. However, his younger brother Bryce is rock solid. Well liked, morally sound like his father and religious. As a Lutheran would probably fit in Minny ok. I know that family is big for him and with both of his parents recovering from cancer, I dont know how far he would stray from Valpo.

Is this a serious post?

If your asking about his inability to recruit then yes. If your asking if he is a serious candidate, then no. I was clearly stating that he has trouble recruiting fellow high school alumni to Valpo. So, Why would anyone think he could recruit for a team like MN?

No, Slick Cal could do, with his methods.

It's like saying every kid who grows up in St Peter should go to Gustavus. A Lutheran school that could be in the MIAC isn't going to have broad appeal.

Being an alum of a local school doesn't necessarily mean you are willing to limit your career path significantly to stay in town. It's still a very hard sell if what you have isn't nearly as prestigious. If this weren't the case Tyus Jones would already be committed here and we would be watching Seantrel Henderson playing for Tony Dungy on Saturdays.

I agree. I was just shedding light on his ability to recruit in a basketball crazed state. He has struggled, even with local kids that he believed he had a good shot recruiting. I realize that Valpo isn't a draw like IU, Purdue, etc. I was just saying that had he landed those guys I would have a greater confidence in his ability to recruit like his older brother Scott. However, that isn't the case and he hasn't recruited well. I don't think that would bode well for Gopher fans per the original post.
