...but I could no longer sit back. This is why MN fans of any sport get the reputation of being fairweather fans. If you don't think we are a better team than under Brewster than you are an idiot!!! Our team is rebuilding. Our coaches have said many times this is a rebuild. We were not expected to win a Rose Bowl this year. We had great non-conference wins. Iowa City is not an easy place to play and ask MSU if they are a rollover team. Northwestern is 5-1 have been nationally ranked and have a game changing player. Those are two tough opening B1G games. At WI is also a tough one. Not going to try and paint a pretty picture, but WI has struggled against lesser teams this year. Also yes the run defense is a concern, but is it impossible for this coaching staff tom make adjustments after two games and be better prepared for a third running team? Also this staff has had success against Wisco while they were at NIU.

Bottom line is RELAX!!! We are an improved team over the last few years, but as coach Kill has openly said many times, we are not where we need to be yet. This is only year two of this staff.

Good stuff man, I agree fully. Also, Northwestern is a better team then they ever were under Brewster. This is Kill's second freaking year, he needs support not a bunch of individuals who want to jump off this train whenever it looks less than desierable.

I don't think the sky is falling. My concern is that rebuilding processes are frustrating and it is tough to keep fans energized. All the more so when you start lining up consecutive "rebuilding seasons". I started at the U as a freshman in Fall 2006, every season has ended with me being told not to worry because next season is better.
2006: Mason will be gone, next year we can stop blowing leads and start to build a great program
2007: it was Brewster's first year, once he starts getting his own personnel in, we will start to be a real contender
2008: Brewster exceeded his win total expectations, he has built some momentum, next year we won't lose our last 5 games, go 0-3 in trophy games, and lose by 55 to Iowa
2009: Brewster will finally have mostly non-Mason personnel next year, things will get better
2010: we fired Brewster, Horton showed us the team can win, next year will be better
2011: it was Kill's first year, things got better at the end of the season, next year will be better

When fans have to go through this many promises of greener fields ahead, it is crucial that when the team has a chance to grab a win, they get it done. If the team wants to keep fan support while rebuilding (before anyone questions my loyalty, I will absolutely continue buying my season tickets, attending games, and supporting the team), they cannot afford to deprive the fans of winnable football games by making the kind of dumb mistakes they did yesterday. I believe that we are on the right track, but if Kill wants to keep the fan support from getting ugly, he needs to give the fan base some wins against Big Ten opponents this year.

I'm glad someone on here is being positive. Great Post.

I agree it is frustrating. This is an example of why you give a guy time and not expect that your mid to lower B1G to make a two year turn around to Rose Bowl contender.

1. Minnesota Gopher fans do not have the reputation of being "fairweather", their has not been any good weather in my lifetime. Anyone who is still posting on this board who has seen 15 years or more of Gopher football cannot be "fairweather".

2. The coaches can say they are rebuilding and that appears to satisfy many in this thread. Words are not enough for me, and the Gophers have not won fewer than 2 conference games since 2007-08 season. This team has been dominated in the first half of both conference games so far and looks like it will struggle to match last years conference win total.

3. The Gophers did not have "great" non conference wins, they beat UNLV, UNH, Western Michigan, and Syracuse. WMU's home win against UCONN is the most significant accomplishment of any of those 4 teams. It's certainly better to win those games than to lose them, but to call that a great accomplishment is hyperbole.

4. If you want people to "relax", then don't claim that an 0-2 Big Ten team in a down conference is unquestionably improved. There is a HUGE gap between the Rose Bowl and a 1-7 type Big Ten season, most people are expecting something in the middle.

When did Brewster ever coach Northwestern? Ohhhhh.... I get it now. You meant when Brewster coached at Minnesota.... DA.

Agree 100 percent. For those of us who have watched this program over the years, it's always the same drill. Hire a new coach and start over every couple of years while waiting for the "rebuilding" process to be completed. The problem is that it never is. Yet we hear the same song and dance from both coaches and players every year. As such, we're all a little weary of the same old, same old "hey, it's a process and we're getting better" shtick that this program has trotted out year after year while ugly losses mount up.

Is this team better than last year? I would say yes. But honestly, that isn't saying much. The team is still pretty darn bad when you break it down. As such, I'll just be pleasantly surprised when (if) they win a couple of conference games.

Not fairweather? Fill up the dome vs. Michigan and then refuse to show up after a big loss. Jump on the Tim Brewster bandwagon 7-1 start he had and then completely turn their back on the program? There are numerous others I can name and it is not just Gopher football.

You really think that they are not improved? If they had lost to Indiana and Illinois fine, but look at the 2 losses. I understand words are not enough, but honestly what are you expecting? Did you think this was a Rose Bowl team? Obviously there is a huge gap between Rose Bowl and 1-7 type, but to expect a new staff 6 games into their second year to be halfway is ridiculous. This isn't basketball or hockey where one or two recruits turns a program around.

And yes considering how our league looked during the non-conference season and where we have been the last two years, I would say the non-conference performance was great.

I have no problem with those that are weary. I have no idea of Kill will get it done. It is what it is though. Kill is going to get his shot to turn it around. We are rebuilding, and we are better than last year. It may not be as much improvement as some think there should be, and that's fine. But I personally will remain optimistic because I believe we are heading in the right direction. Doesn't mean I wasn't disappointed in the performance or anything.

Like most things in life, it's never as good or bad as people think.

I don't really get this post, especially on Gopher hole.

It's bizarre to come to Gopherhole and complain about fairweather fans. Most of us have been here through a lot and we'll continue to be fans whether Kill is succesful or if not. A lot of us follow spring bowl and attend the spring scrimmage. I have gotten into a lot of disagreements with different fans on this site, but I would say the overwhelming majority are hardcore Gopher fans.

I also haven't heard anyone call for Jerry Kill's head or anything like that. There has been some criticism over the play, but that's to be expected. I can gurantee you that Kill was mad as hell about the snapping issues and some other of the bone headed plays.

When a team loses a winnable game in a sloppy fashion, they are going to get criticisized by their fans, and they should!

People who complain about others being fairweather are just looking for a pat on the back at the expense of calling other people out, even if it's a total lie. Bob is correct, there's no such thing as a fairweather Minnesota fan because we're never had fair weather.

It's always the same illogical overreaction. We lose, a few people make some pointless threads to rant and complain, and then a few people make threads complaining about those people complaining. If you want people to relax, start with yourself.

I don't disagree with a lot of what the OP is saying, but this Northwestern team isn't all that great and certainly isn't as good as the Northwestern teams that were led by the likes of Kafka and Persa. Colter is a very good football player and Venric Mark is an excellent one-cut runner, but that's about all they've got.

The point of this post (or lack there of) was just my reaction to the "sky is falling", "here we go again", and "is this coach the answer" type posts that were being posted (and yes they were being posted) after the loss. It was my failed attempt of talking fellow Gopher fans off the ledge. It was not meant to pat myself on the back for not being a fairweather (and yes there are many on this board) fan.
