Fellas/Gals - What a great season! 10-2 in PJ Fleck's 3rd year? Who would've thought.
In all the years that I have been following the Gophers, I have never been this exhausted and excited at the same time like this season watching Gopher Football. Sure, I am disappointed that they didn't win one of the last two games that would have sent them to the Rose Bowl. I feel bad for the Seniors.
I am very optimistic for the future of this program. There is commitment from the Administration, the AD, all the way to the BOR. Fleck is just guy at the right moment in Gopher history to do it. PJ Fleck is showing that he can his staff can recruit. Be patient. If you look at Barry Alvarez's and the succession of Badger coaches, their winning followed the famous PJ Fleck Uptrending Zig-Zag Chart.
I picked the Gophers to finish 7-5, and many prognosticators predicted a 6th place finish in the B1G West. Nebraska was the darling to dethrone Wisconsin.
Sure the Gophers didn't win against Iowa which would have sealed the Big Ten West, and they faltered yesterday.
They were in a tough position mentally at Iowa City after upsetting Penn State the previous week. Iowa just outplayed the Gophers enough and with a couple of Gopher miscues, an opportunity was lost.
Losing Daniel Fa'alele was a big key. Wisconsin was able to get to Tanner Morgan and disrupted the Gophers rhythm. Game planning and adjustment by the coaches was another. On Defense, they couldn't stop Wisconsin's game planning attack. Jonathan Taylor and Wisconsin's passing game which drastically improved after losing to Illinois was way too much. The Gopher's didn't do so well in game planning. The Badgers were the ones with explosive plays.
IMHO, the Gophers will improve and will win championships. It is not easy to become Big Ten Champions. Just ask Coach Fitz and Ferentz. Fitz's team would have made it to the Rose Bowl last year
Wisconsin has been to four Rose Bowl appearances under Barry Alavarez which was a feat considering it was the original Big Ten Conference. They went to two under Bret Bilema. They are on the cusp of going to the Rose Bowl for the first time under Paul Chryst. They would've gone to the Rose Bowl in 2017, but they went to the Orange Bowl instead. Georgia and Oklahoma played a college football playoff game at the at the Rose Bowl that year.
Kirk Ferentz took Iowa to the Rose Bowl once in 2015 in 21 years of coaching. Pat Fitzerald did not bring the Wildcats to the Rose Bowl last season as the Big Ten West Champ. Ohio State went instead because they did not make it to the CFP.
I am going to sit back and enjoy what the Gophers have accomplished this season. My health prevailing, I hope to see the day that the Gophers win a championship.
Go Gophers!
