Last week it was offensive pass interference, this week Aaron Hill planting Taylor Martinez 10 yards out of bounds and flag gets picked up with a referee stating defiantly the tackle began in bounds and ended in bounds. I guess it evens up.

Yep, Husker fans were grumbling about that one. We sit on the opposite side, so I didn't get a good look at it.

The most important calls in the Minn/Neb game were the personal foul calls (or lack thereof). The Gophers dodged two flags on Nebraska's last scoring drive: the tackle well out of bounds, and a hit on Martinez (just after he released a pass) helmet to facemask that could have been flagged for hit to the head by definition of the new rule. That said, Nebraska scored anyway, so the end result was essentially the same.

I'm not sure Hageman should have gotten a personal foul call on his first facemask. He did catch the facemask of Martinez, but only briefly, let go immediately, and then sacked Martinez cleanly the rest of the way. It seemed a call that could go either way, but maybe it's my own bias that lends me to think it wasn't worthy of a PF call.

Nebraska's first offensive play of the game was a WR screen pass. Keeping in mind the terrible call against Wolitarski last week, the outside receiver was blocking our corner well before the ball arrived, preventing a possible play on the ball. It just makes the call against Woli last week that much worse that, even had he touched the NW defender (which he didn't come close to doing), offensive PI off of the ball is so very rarely called.

And the one thing I like about the Gophers is they don't let the referees or the opponent distract them or get them down. They are showing amazing focus.

That hit that hit him somewhere between the shoulder pad and his chin was caused when Martinez was be tackled and leaned backward and down. If he had remained upright the shot would have hit him between the shoulder and the ribs. I don't think he launched but lowered his shoulder and helmet into Martinez. I didn't think it was a foul either in real time or now from replay. And as you say, it was mute they ended up scoring.

Are we talking about the hit where the player was wrapped up in bounds and then ridden out of bounds? Late hit out of bounds is just that. A late hit out of bounds. If a player is wrapped up in bounds and then ridden out, it is not a penalty.

Completely legal, and the right call to pick up the flag.

Can't remember how the drive ended, but the big hurdle that Abdullah had on our defense one of Nebby's OL TACKLED one of our LBs. I couldn't believe there wasn't a holding penalty called.. I was LIVID at the time, only because it was so blatant.

I'm sure most people won't agree with me here, especially with the new emphasis on safety in football (which I think is a big issue), but I'll say it anyway: I think they need to relax the facemask rule. Unless a defensive player grabs and tugs on a player's facemask in order to make a tackle, I don't think it should be called. When Ra'shede had his facemask call on the Martinez sack, all he did was wrap up Martinez and his hand ended up on Martinez' facemask, which was most likely completely an accident. He didn't tug (at least from what I saw from the stands), and in no way did he use the facemask to make the tackle on Martinez that he otherwise wouldn't have been able to make.

Again, I didn't see the replay or anything on that play yet, but I've seen a lot of facemask calls in football recently that really don't have any potential to hurt the player player being tackled, and the tackle would have been made regardless.

I think the problem was that Hill didn't let up, and drove Martinez into the ground several yards OoB. Perhaps the call could have been "unnecessary roughness", then.

Actually I thought they were correct to pick up that flag. Hill started the tackle when Martinez was still in bounds. The calls that Nebraska has a right to complain about was when Murray hit Abdullah late out of bounds and Manuel's helmet to helmet hit on Martinez after he threw a pass.

Agreed, assuming you're referring to the first of the two facemask calls. The second was pretty obvious, in my opinion, and was the right call, IMO - Martinez's head was fully yanked, even if an incidental/accidental grab.

I disagree, anytime you get a hand in a guys facemask there is potential for injury. I would not mind seeing the 5 yard variety come back but you have to call a penalty if a player grabs a facemask even if it was unintentional or brief as it was in the case of the first flag on Shede.

Yes, I was referring to the first call. And yes, I agree that any tug/yank on the facemask, even if accidental, should be called.

This is what the call should have been. I think the officials thought was that he couldn't avoid going to the ground. Ref had a poor explanation.

By rule you can put a hand on the face mask incidentally, by both time Hageman grasped a turned the head. IMO good calls, but get missed from time to time.

On the play prior to the 33 yd. TD on 4th down, the Gophers illegally shifted. It was not called and may have been declined anyway. If pushed back to 3 and 15 and further out of FG range we may have had a different sequence of plays.

Gophers played hard and when you do that, things fall your way. I thought more calls went our way and I'm perfectly fine with it?

It was a good call the husker was in bounds at the start of Hill's tackle, it's only a flag if you start your hit when the ball carrier is clearly out. For the record there were about five bad calls against us vs NW, Nebraska fans can suck it up for once and deal with what a gopher fans deals with since birth!

I saw that too. I believe one of the WR moved up to get on the line while another went in motion. I thought it was pretty obvious and was surprised they missed it.

In the case of the Hill picked up flag, at least it didn't essentially take a possession away like the missed call in the NW game did. NE still scored a TD on that drive.

A few in my group noticed it too. Perhaps the reason for the timeout before the ball was snapped?

If the timeout came before the ball was snapped, no penalty. There is an opportunity to reset for a full second with no motion prior to the snap. If there is no snap there is no illegal shift.

The ball did get snapped, but I believe the TO was called at almost the same time.

I think the TO must have been credited just before the snap. If they got the TO and not the penalty, then the TO was granted first meaning the snap did not occur. Once the snap occurred the TO could not have been granted until the end of the play, the penalty was enforced, or the penalty was declined. It sounds much like avoiding a delay of game with a TO.

I was shocked they missed the illegal shift as well that is about as easy as a call you will have in a high school college or pro game..

For as many times as we get screwed.. we got the benefit of about 4 or 5 calls that went our way today... murry hit late out of bounds.. hills was personal foul... they also pickup a flag they threw for not enough guys on the line off scrimmage which I can't believe they picked that one up because on the replay it still looked inside slot guy was not on the line... I would have called that to...

Thanks ref we finally got some to go our way.. the crew was not very good... the targeting on manuel could of got ejected for that.

B.S., it was a borderline helmet to helmet situation but definitely not targeting. Targeting is for launching or leading with the crown of your helmet, the contact was made with the facemask.

Let's throw in Bell's phantom catch on Nebraska's first scoring drive. He dropped the ball and rolled on top of it. Not reviewed. Watch it again.

I thought the reffing was pretty fair this week. Both facemasks were correct calls, IMHO. Also, it was absolutely correct to pick up the flag on the Hill play the OP is talking about. Hill hit him in bounds and was on his back - they guy carried him 2 yards out of bounds and then Hill & the guy fell down with Hill on top. It looked worse than it was, in other words, and it was good they picked it up.

The 2 things I thought they missed or maybe should've called. Nebraska had a nice run down to our 15 or so (on the student section end, on the visitor sideline) and some Gopher hit him just after he stepped OB. I thought it looked OK live, but the Neb fans around us were mad and on the replay on the big board it looked worse than live. So maybe that should've been called. Don't remember if they got a FG or TD that drive.

The other one was on some Nebraska 3rd & long. Martinez audibles to an Abdullah run and he sweeps to the left side where we had exactly 1 guy out there who was absolutely getting mugged by some Nebraska lineman. The Neb player had one hand on our guys front and on hand on his back, both with fistfuls of jersey. The block started out fairly OK, but our guy turned and it should've been a holding call. Oh, well.

Not much real stuff to complain about the refs this game. Go Gophers!
