Why I hate homers

First, a bonafide occupational qualification is never about origin! Never. I could care less if the guy would come from a hard luck background, or the ugly A Prairie Home Companion variety! Minnesota Nice. Forgetaboutit! That is why Sumlin, Trestman, Nielson, Grant or any Seattle Seahawk or Denver Bronko assistant is out of consideration.

The proof of qualification has to do with year over year success in winning. There are so many non bonafide qualifications being mentioned on this board that it makes me want to wrech!

I think a MN connection is a bonus, but not a need. A winner is much more important. None of the guys with MN ties get me excited.

I can't believe they gave the Gopherhole the authority to hire the next coach.

Good point. In some ways selecting a coach is just like buying a house or a car. You figure out your price range, and then write down a list of desirable attributes. Some go in the "must have" column, others go in the "nice to have". Our next coach possessing MN/Midwest ties definitely belongs in the latter category. You make that a requirement, and you're headed for trouble. Look at some big name schools that made that mistake. Alabama having a requirement that their coach had to have ties to Bear Bryant. It wasn't into Nick carpetbagger Saban came along that they got over that. And SCum's requirement that their coach be a "Michigan Man" has gotten some halfwitted coaches over the years in several sports. Ironically, they go 180 degrees with dickrod and wind up even worse.

Frankly I could care less about the Minnesota ties. Yeah, it might help with recruiting & fan support, and it might buy him a temporary pass with the media, but I'd take a coach with ties to Al Queada if he can beat Iowa and Wisconsin every year.*

*That's called hyperbole, in case some self-righteous twit wants to go off on me for writing that. Just trying to make a point.

Agree. We don't have a rich history (last 50 years) or a U of M coaching tree to draw from.

The only reason that having a Minnesota connection has any relevance at all is the hope that if the new coach has success, he might be a little less likely to leave for another job.

I hope you are right, but I think it will have relevance to the U, especially if they strike out on the “A-list” names. I believe that this hire is going to be as much about securing season ticket renewals and exciting the fans as building a solid, long term base for the program. A recognizable name will score a lot of points in the evaluation process and Minnesota ties will help in that area. If they can secure a well known candidate (Harbaugh, Golden, etc.) then the lack of Minnesota ties won't be a problem. If they are digging deeper, then I think those ties will play a larger role in determining who gets the offer.

So you do care where they come from then? Seems to contradict the tone of your post....

Of course not

Except the range of qualified candidates is very slim in or from Minnesota.

You missed his point Mavis Beacon.

Anyways in general I agree I don't care if the candidate has Minnesota connections or not, however Sumlin is genuinely qualified.
