The Howard Pulley program has all of their teams in Lawrence, KS this weekend for the Jayhawk Invitational. All six teams won on Friday night, including the 17U Black team. Sounds like Jacob Thomas played very well (see HP writeup below), as he was mentioned by two of Scout's writers in their articles this morning. DJ Peterson and Chance Creekmur from the Net Gain team were also noted.

From the HP site:

Game 1 - The 17 Black's dispatched the very pesky KC Keys 80-65 behind Jacob Thomas who knocked down 5 three-pointers on his way to 22 points, 2 rebounds and a steal, and Joe Coleman who is playing as well as any sophomore in the country with his 20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Cedric Martin played well and delivered 13 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals while his backcourt mate Moses Sundufu came up with 8 rebounds, 7 points and 4 steals. Seantrel Henderson who is looking more like a high major basketball player every day the way he controls the paint tallied 7 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Other contributions: Marvin Singleton 6 points, 2 steals and 2 rebounds; Chad Calcaterra 5 rebounds, 4 points and a blocked shot and Peter Crawford 5 rebounds, 3 points and 2 assists.

Phog.net has an analysis:

Jacob Thomas, SG, Howard Pulley- In terms of straight up shooting ability, few in the class of 2010 can strip the nets from deep like the 6-foot-3 shooter for Howard Pulley. Not only does the slender wing have deep range, he gets his pretty jumper off ridiculously quick and he does a nice job of setting up his jumper with simple fakes and one dribble moves to shed defenders. He’s lacking strength, but his ability to smoke jumpers from just about anywhere inside of half court gets him high major looks.

Somewhere down the line, Seantral Henderson is going to make an awful lot of money playing football. Even on the basketball floor, he looked like a money making left tackle with his great feet, strong hands and impressive frame. Standing 6-foot-8 and weighing in at a solid 315 pounds, he moves incredibly well for a young man his size. A terrific passer, he probably had the single most athletic move of the night manuevering around a defender for a tip dunk. A very clever passer, he also caused one opponent to nearly wet his pants trying to get out of the way of a soon to be delivered Henderson screen. The “Oh shi(f)t” blurted out from a terrified opponent was not only audible, it was hilarious and well understood.

Go Gophers!!

Here is an analysis from ScoutHoops.com:

Jacob Thomas, SG, Howard Pulley – There aren’t many guys in the country better at knocking down three balls than this 6-foot-3 two-guard. Thomas, a standout at Columbia Heights (Minn.) High, has a quick trigger with range that extends at least two feet behind the three-point arc. The talented shooter drained at least six threes in the Panthers opening round win.

Jacob Thomas mentioned Wisconsin, Minnesota, Florida State, Notre Dame, Northern Iowa, Iowa, Iowa State, Santa Clara, Drake, Creighton and California.

Go Gophers!!

Thomas is sounding more and more like a player I want us to offer. We seriously need shooters and every good team has a few guys who can stroke the J. If he's a legit 6-3, 6-4 and can handle I'm all for it

At the risk of angering everyone, we have a player that sounds very similar to what those websites describe Thomas as... Blake. And, as we all know, shooters go cold, and then everyone turns on them.

This is nothing against Thomas- I've never seen him play or anything. I'm just saying that we should perhaps reconsider our pessimism against our own shooter if we are going to talk about how excellent another one is. A compliment to Blake in the shooting department could help them both, though.

I am sure we have a few others to consider before Jacob - given the schollies. But, he would be nice to fill up the spot up duty down the road. I also think Blake will be fine as we are to improve offensive game at all positions next season and thus afford Blake more good looks.

What sets Thomas apart from Blake is the threat to drive coupled with a very good first step/jab step. I've seen him a couple of times and he had defenders backing up and tripping over themselves and then bam, a quick (very quick) J. He is not just a catch and shoot guy. I'm rooting for him.

Gophers Have A Full Roster Now

They will graduate a forward (Johnson), wing (Bostick), and shooter (Westbrook).

Thomas seems to be improving against tougher competition this spring. He might be a nice replacement for Westbrook as a shooter.
