How would you feel about a player wearing a legends number?

Last week against Notre Dame Devin Gardner wore the #98 of Tom Harmon. How would you feel if the Gophers did something similar? Each conference home game and one non-conference game one player is selected to wear the retired number of a Gopher Legend.

If someone wants to wear 19 it's fine with me.

not every game, but if you're playing a historical match up/rivalry game then maybe. too often and it just becomes silly.

Marcus Jones will be wearing an honored jersey on Saturday.

I think it would be neat to have a team award named for each of the retired Gopher numbers awarded for attributes that the particular legend is known for. Only non-seniors are eligible to receive them, and then at a specific game the next year (maybe a rivalry, homecoming, or some game that is expected to be well attended), those players all wear the corresponding numbers.

1. Can we come up with our own idea and quit trying to copy other schools?

2. Most of these kids have their numbers for a reason. Some guy from the '50s probably doesn't mean anything to them.

Not a good idea - "retired" means retired. But I suppose when you get three quarters of a century away from the original, very few will have any memory of him. Still, so few numbers are retired, why not leave it that way?

I like this idea better than retired numbers. I am a big proponent of having numbers of greats on a ring of honor and posted in the stadium and/or elsewhere but I do not like retired numbers. Especially on a college team where they are having to duplicate numbers on "O" and "D" because there are more than 100 dudes on the team.

If I was a college player and my number had been retired, I'd think it would bring MORE attention to my exploits if a current player wore my retired number for a special occasion.

1. How about doing both.

2. That's one reason to do something like this.

I'm of the "retired means retired" mindset as well, bringing it back seems gimmicky and unnecessary. However, I did like that the team took turns wearing Gary Tinsley's #51 last year. That was meaningful and cool.

Side note: I was pissed when I found out Jose Iglesias was going to where Sweet Lou Whitaker's non-retired #1 when he got traded to the Detroit Tigers. Retire that damn #1, Detroit!

Yeah, I guess I don't know what the U means by "retired numbers". We have 5 retired numbers and 2 of them are being used on the current roster: #15 (Stephens/Jones) and #78 (Bell/Lauer). Makes no sense to me.

Eventually you would run out of numbers. The more numbers you retire, the faster that day comes.
