Ruppert brought up an interesting point that I don't remember being looked at too much... Would this team be any different with Jimmy Williams as an assistant coach? Tubby tried to bring him in but was denied by Maturi, so you can't put much blame on Tubby for that. Would Jimmy Williams have made the team better though? Would he be able to bring in better recruits? Which coach would not be with us now if he did make it to Minnesota?

From what I have seen people say, he is pretty good at coaching the big guys. But I have no actual idea.

Easy: Sampson would be throwing down hammer-dunks.

Jimmy was truly a "player's coach" I don't think you would've seen the transfers in that regard. I most certainly think the quality of recruits would've been upgraded. Dutcher was not a great recruiter, but with Williams doing the ground work they brought in some classes.
I believe the year they brought Holms, Mitchell, Tucker and the likes it was one of the top classes in the nation. I believe Jimmy developed both McHale and Randy Bruer among others.
JMO. But I really think we wouldn't be talking about the perils of Tubby had Williams been hired.

No - he would be open for a dunk but decide against it and try a layup....and miss.

+Hall, Rautins and Stallings. Ranked #1 class in the country.

Stallings and Rautins both transfered.

The hyperbole and speculation on this board is sometimes unbelievable.

In the time since Williams was personally responsible for the U's glory days in basketball by either recruiting the best players on the planet or by molding them into basketball superman, he has had a curious career. Since 1988, he has been an assistant at 6 different colleges according to my quick research. That doesn't include 2 years with our Wolves where he very well might be the main reason KG is headed for the Hall of Fame or the couple of years being a scout for the NBA Warriors. He also was at Oklahoma State two separate times. Every one of his gigs was 3 years or less. That's 9 separate jobs in about 20 years of coaching since he sat out a couple of lawsuit years.

I realize assistant coaches move around; I know he coached Mychal and McHale, oh, about 30 years ago; and I know he's respected. But, really, folks? Why, if he's so valuable, wasn't he kept around? Because Louisiana-Lafayette pirated him away from Nebraska who got him from San Diego State who stole him from Tulas? Oklahoma State had one really good year while he was there, but we ain't talking Duke or Kansas here. On a list of the Tubby's 20 main reasons he's in this situation, not getting Jimmy Williams should be about 21. There are tons of good assistant coaches out there, most of whom haven't been involved in NCAA sanctions and many who have a more solid resume.

Respectfully disagree Mulligan. Tubby thought enough of him to make him his top ass't coach. Why do you think he won the settlement? In the trial,if you read the transcripts, he had nothing but positive support from his peers. The so called " Incident in Madison" all players were eventually found not guility.

I 100% agree with this. To say that Jimmy Williams would be the difference in this team is a stretch, IMO. How do you know he would not have had a negative effect?

Stallings and Rautins both transfered.

Point being(whether it was Wms, Dutch or blind luck) it was the #1 recruiting class in the country.

Note: Rautins transferred, Stallings committed but did not enroll I believe.

Don't you have to occasionally mosey inside the arc to throw down hammer dunks?

Not clear on the hating for Jimmy Williams. Look at the development of McHale, Breur, Shasky, etc. Plus, a stud recruiter, which this staff does not currently have. The dude who is supposed to be the recruiting guru is never mentioned in any of the conversations with the players that they are recruiting.

I can think of about a million things. Give or take a few dollars.

No hate, just confused by the love. You do realize how long it has been since those players you mentioned played here? I'm sure he's competent, but, jeez, why all of the moving around if he's such a super basketball man?

I bet some of our recruiting targets would at least mention him in stark contrast to lead recruiter Vince Taylor, who never gets a mention!

Given that the Gopher Athletic Dep't would rather pay Williams 5 years salary to just go away...and stay away...I would guess we'd be in a heap of dung if he were around these parts.

In Tubby's first couple of years, some people here were talking up Vince Taylor as an all-world recruiter. We were worried that he was going to be hired away as a head coach. But now it's been a few years since I've heard his name mentioned.
