How Quickly does Fleck get Extended if we repeat 10-2 next year?

Looking at the schedule, we have a decent shot at doing it again. If we did, would the University allow Coyle to throw more money at PJ?

Let's say we extend our non-conference unbeaten string and enter the Michigan game 5-1 or 6-0. Is there anyway we don't add some $$$ to the contract at that point?

I believe we would.

There will be a few key things that will lead to another contract extension in season to keep an eye on.

1. How does this recruiting cycle finish up - can we poach a few players and bump up our rankings?

2. How do we play in the bowl game? Can we get to 11 wins for the first time in forever?

3. How does the 2021 recruiting class after the summer next season? Are we looking like a top 20ish class?

4. Are we able to win 2 or 3 of Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan in the first 7 weeks of the season?

If 3 of those 4 look good, I expect we extend him in season again next year with another pay raise and an even higher buyout.

Because he is doing his job? NO. Win a major post season game and more importantly, beat our rivals.
 

My personal opinion is that Fleck will receive a one(maybe two) year extension every year for a while until he is solidly in the top 4-5 paid in the B1G. Primarily to keep him at 7-8 years and to increase the buy outs to keep predators away...
 

Big Ten wins will help. Conversely: Big Ten losses would not help with contract extension considerations. The BT winning percentage numbers at the time tell us whether to extend now or whether to wait a bit. A five million dollar buy out clause still in effect helps provide a bit of security for Director Coyle. See how the Big Ten season in 2020 goes would get my vote. Not that it matters too much on December 3, 2019...
 


He will get one year extension every year going forward unless the results really take an unexplainable dive. With that yearly extension, the U should also bump out the buyout terms as well so the $10 Million continues to be the buyout amount.
 


If MN goes at least 9-3 with 6 B10 wins next year, I would keep adding another year. Sustained success is what we are all looking for.

6 Big 10 wins next year from:
vs Iowa
@ Maryland
@ Wisconsin
vs Michigan
@ Illinois
@ MSU
vs Purdue
vs Northwestern
@ Nebraska

Only one game looks like a likely loss at this moment (@ Wisconsin) assuming teams are roughly the same next year.

@ Maryland, @ MSU, @ Illinois, vs Purdue and vs Northwestern should all be favorable games.

@ Nebraska is a winnable game

vs Iowa and Michigan are gonna be toss ups.

6-7 wins should be well within our reach next year.
 



Coyle said the extension PJ & Co. just signed started to be worked on this past summer.

So to SOME extent it didn't start with this season in mind.

With that in mind I suspect he would have an extension immediately if he can hit 9+ wins.

Otherwise maybe just a nominal +1 year type extension.
 


I'd say if he wins 10 again next year, just write a blank check. The transformation will be completed and we will be setup for sustained success.
Keeping the football program strong helps the entire university. Look at the interest this year, it was off the charts. If he wins 10 next year, I would sit down and have a serious talk about what it will take to lock him up and keep him here, completely here for another 10 years. We FINALLY have our guy. Losing him would set this program back so far it wouldn't be funny. We want this guy to be our Kirk Ferentz.

I agree. I felt like the extension he just received is just to hold serve until next year. They put a huge buyout to prevent him from leaving and to buy themselves and PJ more time. With a similar season (wins/losses, excitement, fan interest, etc) he will be receiving another contract and with each contract he will trending towards the top of the Big Ten.

I agree. It was an extension that was started last summer and sort of reflects that / is there to keep folks around for another run and then reevaluate quickly from there.

Like Beer guy said....We may end up 9th in Big Ten recruiting this year. That’s why we hired him. Right now we have 6 WR in our class?
We need to be competitive or win our bowl game.
How does next year’s 2021 recruiting look next summer when we are essentially done already for December?
Will 5 and 4 be okay in the Big Ten? Or is the floor 6 and 3. Seems many think we aren’t looking back at 7 Big Ten wins. I’d love it but wouldn’t predict it.
Let’s see what things look like in November.

Nobody writes blank checks without results. 10 wins is awesome but before I write a blank check, I need to see at least a BIG west championship and consistent rival victories. We go 10 wins next year and still not win the west, you wait till that division tile comes.
