I chose the $2 - 2.5 million answer. I know it's not part of the culture at Minnesota to spend big on a coach, but I think they now realize the HAVE to spend big to get the program back on track. All they have to do is look at Patterson and realize if they would have ponied up, the program would be in much better shape today, instead of starting over again. A good coach will pay for themselves by adding butts in the seats, advertising and merchandise income, and donations.

There's almost no way they spend under $1M again. They're almost forced to make somewhat of a prestige hire this time.

It's true. For too long the U has seen spending money on the football program as a liability. They should see it as an investment -- one which should be netting them some returns if they invest wisely. Having a solid athletics program (starting with football, hoops, and hockey) is the best way to gain support from everyday people statewide. Support for the U in general will be much higher if the big-time athletics teams do better.

I have supported the U's mission to be a top public research institution. That has been fine, but it does not reach the mainstream Minnesotan very easily.

Burrito and others are hearing $3M a year for 5 years. That puts us in the top 10 nationally and 3rd in the Big10.

It has to be $2-$2.5 Million.

We're in a position right now with a new forming Big 10+2 that if you dont have a quality coach, your program can easily be stalled for years. The competition level becomes much higher next season, and we cant underestimate it this time. I dont want Minnesota to become the Baylor of the Big 10+2. A team that ends up stuck at the bottom while everyone in conference spends a lot of money to win.

I think it’s going to take 3MM+ per season to touch any of the big names sitting on the side.

Leach – Demands of 3.05MM/year with up to 2.05MM/year in bonuses at TTU.

Bellotti - $600,000+ per year in bonuses based on ticket sales during his tenure at Oregon. His replacement is now making 3.4MM/year in base pay.

Spend the money. Spend the money. Spend the money.

No matter how much we pay for a new HC, I'm hoping Maturi leaves enough to pay for top notch coordinators and position coaches. It's the entire package of coaches that make a difference, not just one guy.

I think they will spend up to $3 million. They are sick and tired of having a football program being stuck in mediocre to bad seasons. It's time we get Bud Grant as our coach!

Bingo. Got to have good teachers on the staff. I always thought that was one of the problems under Mason, especially on defense.

I say no way. Somebody posted earlier in another thread that Maturi was on MPR last night(?) and said "we can't pay $4million, and we can't pay $3 million, but we have a basketball coach making $1.8 million so there is no reason to think we couldn't pay a football coach that much."

I'm guessing $2.5 for six years would be the max, but if he goes that high, it's going to be a guy many people will be happy with and that the contract will be structured in a way to make it difficult for the coach to leave should another opportunity present itself.

I have no inside info; just my thoughts.

I think Tubby is going to get an extension at $2 mil per year and our next fb coach will make $2 mill per year plus bonuses and his shoe/tv/radio deals and sports camps.

A hc and his assistants can make a bunch on the extra stuff in addition to their salary.

We can't go higher than 2 mil if we want $$$$ for the assistants...I think we could see our DC and OC making $800,000 - $1 mil per year as well.
