Illinois - John Groce - 19 days
Iowa - Fran McCaffrey - 13 days
Nebraska - Tim Miles - 15 days
Michigan - John Beilein - 17 days
NW- Chris Collins - 14 days
Penn State - Chambers - 11 days

Not really similar situations:
Wisconsin - Bennett retired early in the year, so technically it took them months, but that's impossible to gauge.
MSU- Izzo took over from for Heathcoate (was his assistant)
Ohio State - Matta was it took about a month, Jim O'Brien was fired in the summer for admitting to cheating and Matta was hired about a month later.
Indiana - Crean - They had an interim coach an entire year before Sampson and Crean
Purdue - Painter was coach in waiting (see Izzo)

It's been 7 days since the Tubby firing. There's no need to rush (to an extent) at this point, we're right on track.

This thread should be pinned to the top of the forum. Anyone who is panicking needs to realize these sorts of things rarely get figured out in a week.

Helpful thread. It is funny to consider that and compare all the stuff I am now reading and hearing about how this is a "joke" because a new coach isn't in place already.

I hope all the hysterical Flip Fellators read this and take it to heart.

2 weeks is probably the point where I'd start to wonder what's going on. That would mean the season is over, so there's NOTHING to hold back a hire at that point for sure. I'd be surprised if we go this whole week without a hire though, unless Marshall is truly in play, which I don't think he is.

I will certainly plead guilty for being a big Flip backer. My issue is not at all the time frame. I felt Flip was the right guy and still do and maybe we still will get him. This board is designed for discussion of events and possibilities surrounding Gopher Basketball, it would seem appropriate to speculate and offer opinions. Maybe the mods should shut the board down for a week so there won't be any panicking, bed wetting or other such activity.

If it's not Flip there are other possibilities and it's not wrong to speculate about them pro or con. Nor is it wrong to speculate that Norwood is a genius or not a genius, is doing wonderfully managing this thing or poorly.

It took a while to find Bennett's replacement. I was living in Madison during the time and I remember it. Brad Soderberg was the interim and got them a 6 seed in the tournament. They got upset by Georgia State and Soderberg was gone the next day. Ryan was their 7th choice. They went after Majurus first but he turned it down because of his mother's health. Majurus took forever to make a decision either way. Ben Braun was next and stayed with an extension and building a new arena. Mark Few followed with Tommy Amaker after Few. I can't remember who else was in the list but I remember those were the top choices.

Great thread. I feel better having read this. Thanks Bob.

I wonder if Teague wants to talk to Wichita State Guy before he makes his (next?) offer?

Yeah that whole situation was a mess, everything from Dick Bennett quitting a few games in to the season to firing Soderberg after a pretty decent season to striking out numerous times. We haven't even gotten close to that situation yet.

How does that work with Marshall not playing until Saturday? Would Teague contact him early this week (today) to gauge his interest? Is that against the rules? Is it allowed but frowned upon? Or do you think it will happen if he's interested?

I'm sure they can talk to his agent to gauge interest. If the agent is smart he keeps the Gophers sniffing until after the tournament is over for Wichita in order to maximize leverage for the client.

If the guy has any scruples, he would not talk to any vultures (that would be Norwood) while his team is prepping for the Final Four. Intermediaries only.

I agree with this. If nothing happens in the next couple days, I am guessing that is the next move - talk to Wichita State guy - which he won't do directly until they are done. Then line up offers right after that until someone takes it. Coach signed by next Tuesday at the latest.

Any word from Flip at all? If not, I would say he's not dead-in-the-water. If he is OUT, why haven't we heard from him (unless I missed it, which is very possible.)

I believe a new coach will not be named until late next week or early the following week.

First: I'm not making a commentary on the current coaching search, but...

...it's relevant to note the DATES. The days between one coach leaving and a new one being named is great and all, but context is supremely important.

It really isn't the length but rather that so many people have turned down this job. Unfortunately, this isn't some plum job just because we're in the B10 like a lot of people here want to believe.

So you know exactly who has been offered and turned down the job huh? Because the local media has admitted they know next to nothing about the search right now. Not to single you out or anything but when the media is in the dark I don't really understand the people who come on here acting like the sky is falling and everyone and their brother is turning down NT for the job.

The math is pretty easy to figure out when you know Flip wasn't on top of the list and we know for a fact he was offered the job.

I'm up for that. It's really been sucky to read this board the past couple of months. I pick and choose some threads, but about 90% of them, I know where they're going before they start and just avoid them altogether, just as I may just avoid this side of the board until practice starts with whomever we have as coach.

Not sure if I should be happy that Gopherhole came up with a Strib story or if I should be angry that paid writers are taking ideas off of Gopherhole.

Yeah, I was talking to a friend about it, it's kind of weird. She took it almost directly.

I disagree. The sky-is-falling crowd seems to think that the hiring is bothced because we can't seem to find a coach nor because it's too late. I think there is an element of "we need to get back to recruiting", but I think it's mostly the misconception that this process has been too long rather than it's too late in the year.

But just to throw it out there for you, of the guys who weren't coaches in waiting or replacing an interim (WI and IND), 3 were hired after April 2 (Beilein, Matta, Chambers) and 4 were hired before April 2nd (Collins, McCaffrey, Miles, Groce) were hired.

Why would that matter in the least?
Does the coaching search look better to you if we had never even tried for Shaka? How does swinging and missing on Shaka change anything?
Would you rather not even give it a whirl for the REALLY unlikely candidates so that Teague has a better "batting average"?

Because it makes Teague look foolish and sort of confirms the suspicion that he really didn't have a plan when he decided to fire Tubby.
