How High Can the Gophers Jump in the Polls?

1. Duke (loses to NC State) drops to 3
2. Michigan (beats Ohio State) rises to 1
3. Louisville (beats USF) drops to 4
4. Arizona (loses to Oregon, beats Oregon State) drops out of top 8
5. Indiana (loses to Minnesota) drops to 8
6. Kansas (beats Texas Tech) rises to 4
7. Syracuse (beats Villanova) rises to 5
8. Minnesota (beats Indiana) rises to 2

#1 Michigan at #2 Minnesota. Bring it.

That would be excellent.

If:
- #1 Duke wins @#20 NC State, and
- #2 Michigan wins @#15 Ohio State, and
- #3 Louisville beats South Florida, and
- #4 Arizona wins @#34 Oregon and @ Oregon State, and
- #6 Kansas wins @ Texas Tech, and
- #7 Syracuse beats Villanova, and
- We win at Indiana...

...we'll be #5

All that happens and Arizona loses a game (or Louisville somehow loses to South Florida), then we'll be #4.

All that happens and Michigan loses at Ohio State...hmmm. Do we pass Michigan? I don't think so.

You can make the arguement we should be 3 right now, however this is Louisville, Arizona, Kansas and Syracuse we are dealing with, and we are Minnesota. Even if we beat Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin we probably will not get higher than 4th unless some of those other teams lose.

I think we would. We have played a more difficult schedule. We would be coming off wins against the #12 and the #5 teams in the nation. Wouldn't two wins against top 15 teams be more impressive than a top 5 team losing to a top 15 team?

I don't see us moving in front of Louisville

Overlooking NW already?

Assume we kick off the Big Ten 7-0. We will have beaten teams ranked #18 (soundly), #12 (soundly, on the road), #5 (on the road) and #2.

We'd easily be #3 in the country if not #2.

I get what you are saying, but I disagree. Michigan and Indiana are top 5 teams. I can't imagine the voters would put us at lower than the teams you mentioned solely for the fact that they haven't lost recently. At what point do you look at quality of wins? Assume we beat IU and UM, we would have wins over five top 25 teams, including two over top 5 teams. Duke wouldn't even have that many!

Let's just assume that all teams above us keep winning, except Michigan & Indiana when we play. Also will assume that Louisville beats Syracuse next weekend. Here would be a hypothetical poll on 1/21. I just don't see it unless we get some help.

1. Duke (17-0)
2. Minnesota (17-1)
3. Louisville (17-1) With a fresh win over Syracuse
4. Arizona (17-0)

Maybe it could happen? But IMO if the voters had the guts to move us past Louisville & Arizona in that situation we'd already be in front of Kansas & Syracause.

Ok, but who have Arizona and Syracuse beat? If Cuse beats Louisville that would be a great win and would rightfully move them up, but who else have they beat? I'm on the road right now and don't have a schedule in front of me so I might be missing an obvious big win. And sure Arizona is undefeated, but they have gotten lucky a few times (ex. Colorado).

Duke just lost a key player, has their toughest game of their conf season coming up. Not even sure Arizona would have to lose a game, since they've barely won the last 3, and the media has even made mention that they were given a gift from the refs in the Colorado game, so Arizona's reputation isn't that solid. I think Minnesota could rise to #3, with a Road win over #5 Indiana. #4 if Duke doesn't lose. Louisville and Duke are the only 2 teams, and Michigan, who we wouldn't pass. Beating Michigan would move us up to #1 with the Duke loss, and #2 with a Duke win. Beating Indiana on the road and Michigan, couldn't be ignored, and we'd jump over Louisville. We are already #4 in the RPI. After the Michigan game, we'd move to #1 in SOS, probably #1 in that BPI poll I posted about today, probably #1 in the RPI, so why not #1 in the AP poll as well?! We'd get votes for #1 even if Duke beat NCSU, just because some voters have short memories, or will figure we've improved since the Duke loss.

LOL, but there are ALOT OF IFS there. Fun to speculate, since we're not players and our not being focused on the task at hand isn't going to affect whether we win or lose.

But gotta say this is way too much fun. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts, and hopefully it lasts until at least this time next season!!!! Go Gophers!!!
