Cute article:
Mike Sherels is hoping for a less exciting trip to Houston this time around.
Although Texas Tech scored 10 points in the final three minutes to defeat Minnesota 34-31 the last time his team visited the Bayou City for the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas, Sherels had an even more dramatic finish in his personal life. And the graduate assistant coach for the Golden Gophers wasn't even at the game.
At 1 a.m. on Dec. 28, Sherels was in his Houston hotel room watching television and preparing for bed while his wife Emily, who was eight months pregnant, slept. Emily suddenly awakened and said her water had broken.
Although she was five weeks from her projected February due date, baby Valerie was on the way.
"I'm supposed to be on the sideline, and I'm coaching my wife through labor," Mike said. "We had a TV in the room, which was good, so I was doing that and looking up and watching the game. I'm saying, 'you're pushing, you're doing good.' Then I'd turn and watch the game."
