Per Horstman:
Coach Mike Rhoades typically wants his squad to play with pace and urgency, but its upcoming opponent might try to slow the game down.
Penn State will host Minnesota — the slowest-paced team in the Big Ten — at 7 p.m. Tuesday inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
The Golden Gophers are 11-11, showcasing how the slower pace has brought an even amount of success and struggles thus far. Minnesota defeated both then-No. 20 Michigan and then-No. 15 Oregon but scoring an inefficient 51 points on 61 possessions against No. 7 Michigan State caused a 73-51 blowout loss.
Most recently, the Golden Gophers dropped a home game to Washington — the last-place team in the Big Ten standings — proving there is a low floor with the slow pace.
Averaging 63.9 possessions per game, Minnesota has scored 68.8 points per game while holding opponents to 69.
Penn State continuing its uptempo offense could increase its chances on Tuesday by gaining as many opportunities as possible. The Nittany Lions, who average 82.3 points per game, could easily outscore the Golden Gophers if both squads’ per-game scoring averages hold.
However, if Minnesota successfully brings Penn State down from 72.2 possessions a game to its level, Tuesday could be a closer battle.
