2. Messiness. Last season, five Minnesota turnovers made things really tough for the Gophers in Fort Worth. Holding on to the ball was an issue for both teams in Minneapolis early in the game. A sack-fumble by Terrell Lathan in the first quarter set up a short drive for TCU’s first touchdown of the game. Aaron Green coughed up a big fumble with TCU driving in Minnesota’s red zone, while the Gophers had their own ugly turnover when Rodrick Williams lost the ball into the end zone. Boykin had an interception while under pressure on a throw he shouldn’t have made as well. It was the first game of the year for both teams, and it sure looked like it.

3. Clever Gophers. Minnesota doesn’t exactly have the same level of athletes that TCU boasts, but Jerry Kill did his best to push the tempo and catch the Horned Frogs defense off balance. On its first drive, The Gophers got to the line of scrimmage very quickly after a few big plays, only to be stopped when the pace slowed. A long flea-flicker pass from Mitch Leidner gave Minnesota another boost as the offense again rushed to the line, only to fumble into the end zone and end it. A fourth-down conversion in the third quarter was a big part of a scoring drive that made it a contest, and the Gophers continued to take chances all night with the No. 2 team in the country in town.
