Trying to up attendance to a non conference game maybe?
Yep. This is all about ticket sales. The Michigan and Nebraska games will already be well attended regardless if they are homecoming or not. Now the U can sell some more tickets for the Ohio game too.
However do Michigan and Nebraska fit the bill for a quality homecoming? Weather, Halloweem, MEA, Win, coming off a bye, TV/BTN, etc.
Homecoming would set the time and they may want Nebraska/Michigan to be flexible for TV.
They set the homecoming game on chance to win? Well... 1 out of the last 5... They are really picking them good. Whats wrong with playing Nebraska for homecoming? Michigan might be too late in the season if weather really is your argument. This is purely about selling tickets to a non conference game that otherwise would have been half full. They don't have to worry about selling tickets to the Nebraska game or the Michigan game.

The biggest problem is scheduling Ohio AND Kent State in the same season. 1 cupcake a year maximum. Don't need to find another top 25 team. Just find somebody in the top 100, maybe Iowa State or Northern Iowa.
I think next years non-conf schedule is just fine. One power 5 team (TCU, unfortunately for us a REALLY good power 5 team), and 3 mid to lower tier teams in CSU, Kent State, and Ohio. All three are respectable opponents but also teams we should be able to beat pretty easily.
On the subject of making Ohio homecoming it would definitely seem like a ploy to drive up attendance and to make sure the homecoming game is a very winnable one. No reason to think we can't beat Nebraska and Michigan again this coming season (especially since both have new coaching staffs) but on the same token it is still risky to schedule a traditionally powerful team as your homecoming opponent.

In no way is Ohio or Kent State "respectable". Ohio was #135 in Sagarin next to Texas-San Antonio and Eastern Illinois and Kent State was #169 below Presbyterian and South Carolina State.
Almost all power 5 schools schedule one FCS team, 2 non power 5 teams and one power 5 team. We don't even play an FCS team this year, travel to a 10-3 CSU team and play a top 2 TCU team. I see zero reason to complain about the schedule.
There are plenty of years people can bitch about the non-conference schedule if they want to, but 2015 is not one of those years.
If you can't get over .500 in the MAC or CUSA you are not respectable. period. The same Texas-San Antonio team that beat Houston, lost to Arizona by 3, and Louisiana Tech by 7?
Louisiana Tech beat Illinois.
Illinois beat who?
