Go Gophers!!

Did it three times in the 50s. Nothing before, nothing since. Should be a fun thread.

Lol. What? Are we sure this isn't a joke?

Interesting. I'm assuming they don't want to have HC against Nebraska/Michigan and are trying to schedule a certain win?

Before anyone goes off the rails, MSU played Wyoming for homecoming this year.

It probably boils down to the U of M not wanting to play the game in October due to to instances of cold and/or rainy weather in the past few seasons. The weather swing by just a few weeks from September to October can be big at that time of year. It also likely concerns not wanting to designate the 10/17/15 game against Nebraska as homecoming due to the Huskers traveling so many fans that it blunts the homefield advantage a team should have on such a day. Between Ohio U on 9/26/15 and Michigan on 10/31/15, that's our only home game. We also will likely crush the Bobcats, so getting a definite win in front of assembled alumni and donors may mean something too.

Trying to up attendance to a non conference game maybe?

I like it for people who want to include their families in the event. Weather better and tickets cheaper. A great way to get those under 10 year old fans hooked on the festive experience.

Actually a simple decision. You aren't going to have it on Halloween and that leaves Nebraska the only option. That is MEA weekend in MN. Not saying it's a factor but it could be.

The U may know that Mich or NE is also a night game.

Strange? Yes. Do I have an issue with it? No.

this guy isn't happy!

Yep. This is all about ticket sales. The Michigan and Nebraska games will already be well attended regardless if they are homecoming or not. Now the U can sell some more tickets for the Ohio game too.

However do Michigan and Nebraska fit the bill for a quality homecoming? Weather, Halloweem, MEA, Win, coming off a bye, TV/BTN, etc.

Homecoming would set the time and they may want Nebraska/Michigan to be flexible for TV.

They set the homecoming game on chance to win? Well... 1 out of the last 5... They are really picking them good. Whats wrong with playing Nebraska for homecoming? Michigan might be too late in the season if weather really is your argument. This is purely about selling tickets to a non conference game that otherwise would have been half full. They don't have to worry about selling tickets to the Nebraska game or the Michigan game.

They might as well go all the way and go with Kent State instead. I'm sure they sell less tickets to that than Ohio. They could use the boost for that.

Ding Ding, we have a winner!!!!

+1

That plus the knowledge that Nebraska is a near sell out to traveling fans with or without homecoming attached. And it might be embarrassing to rent out all the grass around the alumni center to Nebraska fans again like they did two years ago when they can't bleeping put together a decent outdoor tailgate experience for their own fans.

The biggest problem is scheduling Ohio AND Kent State in the same season. 1 cupcake a year maximum. Don't need to find another top 25 team. Just find somebody in the top 100, maybe Iowa State or Northern Iowa.

Could be about the money.

Bundle Kent State with another game and make Ohio Homecoming. Gotta hand it to them for a smart decision. I just don't think that was the only or #1 reason.

I think next years non-conf schedule is just fine. One power 5 team (TCU, unfortunately for us a REALLY good power 5 team), and 3 mid to lower tier teams in CSU, Kent State, and Ohio. All three are respectable opponents but also teams we should be able to beat pretty easily.

On the subject of making Ohio homecoming it would definitely seem like a ploy to drive up attendance and to make sure the homecoming game is a very winnable one. No reason to think we can't beat Nebraska and Michigan again this coming season (especially since both have new coaching staffs) but on the same token it is still risky to schedule a traditionally powerful team as your homecoming opponent.

In no way is Ohio or Kent State "respectable". Ohio was #135 in Sagarin next to Texas-San Antonio and Eastern Illinois and Kent State was #169 below Presbyterian and South Carolina State.

Again, it's ok to schedule one of those teams, just not 2, especially not in back to back weeks. You don't build support when a majority of people will just look at the schedule and say call me in a month when you play somebody.

Almost all power 5 schools schedule one FCS team, 2 non power 5 teams and one power 5 team. We don't even play an FCS team this year, travel to a 10-3 CSU team and play a top 2 TCU team. I see zero reason to complain about the schedule.

The same Texas-San Antonio team that beat Houston, lost to Arizona by 3, and Louisiana Tech by 7?

Louisiana Tech beat Illinois.

Illinois beat who?

There are plenty of years people can bitch about the non-conference schedule if they want to, but 2015 is not one of those years.

Totally agree. We are playing a CSU team that was 10-3 and bringing a possible top 3 team in for a home game. Can't remember any recent years as good as that.

If you can't get over .500 in the MAC or CUSA you are not respectable. period.
