Florida International beats Toledo on the last play. Watch the "hook and ladder/lateral" play that sets up the winning field goal. This is for the people that watched part of the game (me) and went to bed in the 4th quarter before the finish.

It looked to me like he was OB in front of the first down marker. Did they review the play?

Yup...play stood. Close, but they called it 1st down during the play and I agree that there wasn't enough to overturn it.

Yes, and I have to agree that it was inconclusive. Watching Toledo I felt like I was viewing a rerun of a Glen Mason coached team trying to hold a lead. They were well ahead and then got a kickoff returned on them for 6, their QB started throwing INT's and their defense was poorly positioned and poorly disciplined when their opponent has a 4th and 17. Classic Mason.

This game was so hard to watch - unbelievable decisions from coaches and players on both sides.

Toledo/FIU, who cares? I swear that they keep coming up with even more crappy bowls every year and because of the number of bowl games you get these matchups of mediocre/poor teams at best (teams that are at or can just above the .500 mark in the MAC or Sun Belt) - these were two teams the Gophs would have beat this past year.

If you actually watched this game, like I did, you might have cared. To see the faces and emotions of the FIU players celebrating a crappy bowl game was a great moment. I for one, am fine with the multitude of bowl games, because you know what? I don't have to watch the ones I don't want to. And when you have so many bowl games, you are bound to get some classic games. This reminded me of the Humanitarian Bowl from last year between Bowling Green and Idaho. Another crappy bowl game with two crappy teams. Except they played their hearts out, and left everything on the field. Watch the post-game interview with the FIU coach, Mario Cristobal, it was awesome.

These are the games that reinforce my love of college football!

No doubt. I was praising the Toledo coach for going for two and the lead. And then they squib kicked on the next play so as to prevent a big return. And you know what happened? They kicked it to the 30, FIU picked it up and ran to midfield! I never understand this. You kick it deep and they return it to midfield and you're labeled as an idiot. But it seems like to me it's much more likely for the opponent to get better field position with a shorter kick.

I don't pretend to know more than football coaches, but to my mind, the squib kick with more than 10 seconds left and the prevent defense while holding a lead (cough-Mason-cough) are idiocy.

Sorry, FIU was 6-6 during the regular season so I'm sure their coach was excited about beating a MAC team to go to 7-6. Yawn! There's a good reason why I didn't watch this game. An insignificant bowl with mediocre to bad teams playing each other with some great plays still makes for a bad game IMHO. I'm old school and in my book everyone doesn't get a medal so sorry, the bowl season should be for deserving teams not just any team with a 6-6 record.

Fair enough. I just don't really see the need to come on a thread and post who cares when people were already talking about what a great game it was (and it was). If I wanted to watch the best I would just watch the NFL by logic, but I enjoy competition, in any form. That's why I can dig high school football, women's basketball, and mediocre college football (I am a gopher fan after all). It seems like I'm recycling a statement that's often repeated on this forum- if you don't care then why are you posting? Why don't you just ignore it? I actually don't care to have this discussion so I think I'll stop right no...

Good Football...

For some 6-6 teams, there were some playmakers out there on that field. How many kickoff returns did the Gophers house this year? At first glance, yeah, I get the yawn, but really, bowl games are massively fun for all involved.

The only thing that sucks about the proliferation of minor bowl games is that whenever we're bowl eligible, we're in minor bowls. I'm jones'in for some New Years Day Gopher Footballin'.

Go Gophers!
