Hoke, Mason, Sumlin and Chryst Possible Candidates for the Indiana Job?

I think Mason would be a good hire for Indiana.

He did a good job at Minnesota and I think he has learned from his mistakes in regards to recruiting and defense.

It sounds as if the AD at Indiana is a self-confident, competent and...

fiscally responsible representative of the administration of the University of Indiana. He is not wasting his athletic department money employing a search firm. He seems to have come up with a similar list of potential candidates as several of the other college football programs with vacancies for a head football coach.(The U of M included.) That will save his athletic budget a lot of money, and will most likely produce about the same type of results.

He also appears to have no personal public relations expenses and has not hired a special agent to assist him. He appears to be able to communicate his goals himself. That also saves a lot of money!

He sounds honest, open and in tune with what talent is available and might be a good fit for Indiana. He is consulting with some Indy Colts executives and, of course, Tony Dungy. He most likely will be able to do a more than adequate job using his own personal strengths, skills and communications abilities to establish a good working relationship with the football coach that he will eventually hire.

I certainly do hope that Dave Mona will fill us all in about how much money our program will need to raise to pay for his salary and for the costs of the search firm. Certainly we can all make some generous contributions to help with those costs! And, maybe soon, we can get a firm list of the potential candidates.

Indiana isn't making a secret out of who their targeted candidates are. Why is the University of Minnesota so secretive about this. Is Brad Childress helping with the search?

If Sumlin is not interested in the Minnesota job, no way he goes to IU.

It sounds like you might have a little crush...

Not necessarily. Sumlin graduated from HS in Indianapolis and played for Purdue. Maybe he thinks he could be the guy to finally bring some respectability to IU. It's doubtful that he would actually take the job, but his ties to the state cannot be dismissed out-of-hand.

That is all well and good, care to make a wager? Dismissed out-of-hand? You just said it was doubtful that he would actually take the job.

No, I don't want to bet. I too said that he won't take the job. Do you know what the phrase "dismissed out-of-hand" means? All I did was point out some reasons why he could be inclined to take a less desirable job, not say that he would take it. It is similar to why Dungy would probably coach here if he ever did coach in college, even though he could virtually have his pick of any job in the country.

No bob, it just seems as though it would be nice to have a fully functioning AD who could do the job all by himself. Yes, I do believe that would be a positive and I think it would impress perspective coaching candidates! As some would say: "...just saying..." ; 0 )

No, I agree, I was just joking. I kind of don't understand the need of expensive search firms and all of that stuff either.

Yes, I know what dismissed out-of-hand means. Thanks. I was willing to dismiss Sumlin out-of-hand because I have heard through the grapevine he was not sold on coming here and I do not think he would take a lesser job, regardless of his ties to the state of Indiana. So, in the end we agree. Sumlin will not coach IU.

The Mason thing is interesting. My gut says Glen wants to coach again, but would he really want to go to IU?

Umm....Indiana is using Neinas Sports Services as its search firm.

He also said the following...almost word for word as Maturi:

In noting that there would be no formal "search committee", Glass said: "While I look forward to soliciting and receiving input from a variety of diverse sources, I think it is important for people to know that selecting this coach will ultimately be my decision, particularly given some of the past confusion in that regard. The buck stops with me."

Nonetheless...entertaining, ill-informed rant per usual.

He will if it gives him a chance to stick it to us.

Yes, max: I saw the "no search committee" and mistakenly wrote no consulting firm. You, of course are correct and I am so very deeply sorry...so incredibly sorry...for my mistake.

However, he is saving money by not bringing in a Dave Mona type to hold his hand when he makes trips to San Diego. Somehow, I don't think real football coaching types like to deal with athletic director types who need someone to spin for them when they make a pitch. And, we all know that the buck does NOT stop with maturi. prexy b has told us that much.

yep, Im sure Mr. Glass won't do any spinning when it comes to the coaching utopia found in Bloomington, Ind. "Coach, you're going love it here. By the way, I know most programs covet home games, but not me....especially home conference games. How do you feel about taking one of those annoying Big Ten home games and playing it in Washington, D.C.! Just think of all the Penn State....err...I mean Indiana alums that will pack the place."

Sumlin is in a good spot at Houston anyways. Doesn't hurt living in a nice city and having to not leave your state or even county to recruit. I've got concerns about his bad defenses translating to a BCS conference. If you can't stop the run then you are in trouble playing Big 10 teams.

Why does Mason think he deserves another BCS job? If he really enjoyed coaching he should head to the MAC. Kent State would be a nice landing spot for him back in Ohio. I dont want to see him keep sitting out thinking what he did at Minnesota should give him consideration for any & every BCS job opening.

Couple things about Mason.....
1 - HEY IF THE PHONE RINGS, HE'S GOTTA ANSWER IT!!!
2 - How hilarious would that be if Mason was the coach at Indiana and he built up like a 31-0 lead on us --- then melted down in the 4th quarter with the Gophers winning on a Hail Mary pass!! Somehow, that would just seem to fit.

If you take Mason at his word, his family is in Minnesota and he doesn't want to leave.

Chryst is an interesting candidate and might fit here. I haven't heard anything about high-profile coordinators in our search and Maturi wants to aim higher, which is alright as long as we don't miss out on a Venables, Wilson, or other guy who will be a successful head coach someday.

I would say Mason's stock has gone up since he started at the BigTen Network. More people probably know who he is now than when he was our coach, that includes recruits who were in middle school the last time we had a second half meltdown and they probably have very little if any recollection of those times. More power to him if he can turn this into a coaching gig.
