I went to the game tonight. It was special to see Hoffarber playing so well. It was even more fun to see a different side of Tubby. A buddy of mine turned to me after the public service announcer informed the crowd that Hoffarber had tied the school record for 3 pointers in a game.

'Too bad, Tubby might have put him back in there if it weren't for that'

I responded, 'Tubby's old school. Hoffarber's done for the night'

Yet, the very next dead ball Hoffarber was back in there. Not only that, Tubby Smith was directing the offense set picks for Blake. Any time Tubby actually yells during an offensive possession is notable. For him to do it in order to allow a player a chance to attain a record was mind boggling.

Then Tubby slapped Blake five on his way to the bench. Those two have a really unique relationship. It's good to see Hoff recover from last year's starter to non-factor fall from grace.

I also thought it very bizarre that Tubby put him back in. He always seems to SLAM on the brakes when the Gophs get close to 100 (against St. Joes we were at 94 with 3 minutes and change to go), so I was very surprised that he put him in for the sake of the record. And not only that but he made it blatantly obvious, it wasn't a rotation type thing, he subbed Hoff for Bostick and after Hoff drilled the 3, promptly subbed him back out.

Tubby is all about setting records. Everyone knows he schedules all these cupcakes just so he can extend his 20 wins per season streak.

Blake is a shooter and that's probably why he's a Gopher. But, he has other positive aspects to his game. His defense has inproved. He has an instinct for rebounding. He gets his share of lay ups.

Chances are he will have good nights and bad nights shooting. But, the rest of his game is a constant.

Which is why Tubby still played him the 3rd most minutes on the team last year. The kid brings more to the floor than just a jump shot (I saw that he's something like third on our team in rebounding averaging 4/game behind Sampson & Iverson, and has the 2nd best assist/TO ratio behind Nolen).

Granted, shooting is an important part of his game, but it's not the only thing that gets him minutes.

Blake has been amazing. If he can keep it up into Big 10 play I'll be very optimistic that we can steal one from Mich St. or Purdue.

Dreamy

I agree on Hoff's performance but if I have to see the "Blake is Dreamy" sign one more time on TV I am going to puke!

Blake is Dreamy=Frankie Sweet Music Viola?

Just saying. :)

Tubby exhibited that exact same behavior 63% of the time at Tulsa, 74% at Georgia, and 80% at UK. It's nothing new. Oh, and did you know that Tubby is one of only 15 active coaches that have won a National title? He has also coached up 20 players that have made it to the NBA. Last night was Tubby's 132nd consecutive win against a non BCs school at home on Tuesday night's in even numbered months when the windchill at game time was below zero.

And Tubby is often known to high five players that do extremely well, and AV, though it sounds like a disease, really doesn't mean much of anything.

A skinny 6' 4" guard that can barely dunk the ball and he's 3rd on the team in rebounding. The definition of a high basketball IQ.
