took a bit longer this year.

but revolving the offense around him has taken development away from the likes of Rodney.. how many open drives to the baseline did Rodney pass up last night??... and with Michigan's gutless low block D, he should have had a dozen dunks.

instead Rodney stands there, feigns a look to the post, and passes right back to Devoe. two dribbles to the right baseline and he's one hop from the hoop.

Hoff needs Westy and Devoe to have reasonable games - then he is very effective!

I love Hoff to death, but the problem is that he is not athletic enough to make his own shot. He needs another teammate to set a screen for him, or he needs to find a hole in the zone in order to be effective. He should be a role-player, not a starter.

Agreed.

Rodney's lack of a jumper and his reluctance to dribble the ball is why he seen limited minutes.

So Hoff plays a tough 2 games after beating up WI and he's hit a wall? Interesting...considering his stats for 25+ games this year...

Hoff's development has had nothing to do with Rodney's lack of development. Williams STARTED a number of games year and once the Big 10 came, just was completely lost out there. He didn't have the offensive or defensive fundamentals to contribute a high level. Thus, he's had to learn as he's gone along.

Without Hoff we wouldn't have won a good number of games this year (including the OSU, Butler, and WI wins, all of which he had great stat lines). Can't same the same for Rodney.

but revolving the offense around him
You honestly think the offense has revolved around Hoffarber? If that was meant seriously...you really need to watch more games.

He typically gets about 3-4 screens in an entire game...if that's revolving our offense around him...we revolve our offense around Cobbs, Joseph, and Iverson as well.

Actually Rodney kinda fell off during that 76 classic and never really regained the confidence he showed early. He's shown some recent flashes though of the kid we saw early in the year. I think he'll have a pretty good soph season. His junior year is when I expect him to blossom into a "stud", in respect to being a top tier player. At least, that's my hope lol.

'a tough 2 games'???? wow, you are amazing..
try 4 tough games...

(for those on the board who take showin for his word and don't bother to actually lookup stats):

minutes: 30, 37, 27, 26
points: 6, 5, 3, 5
3's: 3/12 total
boards: 6 total
assists: 5 total
t/os: 4 total.

who cares how many 3's he hit against Brown?... this is crunch time..
also, i've said before Hoff doesn't do a lot of non-stat things: deflect balls, alter shots, etc.

i told you a month ago he's not a Diebler nor Rautins.. case closed.

As I said, without Hoffarber, we probably wouldn't have had our 3 biggest wins of the year (in addition to a number of other games).

Substituting Rodney for Hoffarber in the OSU, Butler, and WI games would've probably resulted in at least 2 losses out of the 3.

Plus, the fact remains that Rodney doesn't have anything close to resembling an outside shot. Simply put, with a team that sorely lacks good shooters, we need a shooter on the floor at nearly all times to keep the D honest.

if we had a coach that could coach offense or a PG that could create for others Hoff would be much better. Why don't we have him consistently coming off picks?

Also i wish there was a way to look at all the game this year and see if Westy has ONE assist to Hoff this year?

Incredible this thread. Yeah blame the year on Hoff. All he has done is start and hit like 80 3's, pass crisply, probably leads the guards in rebounds, always there blocking out opposing guards.

Williams development affected by Hoff, sure. How about Williams putting on some weight? Suppose Hoff ought to teach Williams how to shoot, oh wait, he could teach everyone else on the team as well. Maybe teach Westbrook not to force shots, yeah like that would work. We wouldn't have the problem we have now.

Look at Wis, they have 7 footers scoring from 3 land, what so what we have here, maybe scoring from 6 feet? Maybe? And I like our big's, just wish this team was more versatile.

His stats are very interesting considering he totally disappeared in half the games he played.

Hoff would be a role player this year on every other Big Ten team with a plus .500 record.

Earlier in the year Westy didn't find Blake very often, lately, last 6-8 games, I think you would be surprised how many times Westy has hit Blake for an assist. He hasn't done it many times, but been a few lately.

I agree! His role would be to START!

No way you sit the #1 3 point shooter in the conference.

I wonder if Williams has ever developed some go to moves that he has confidence in. He should have a couple of post up moves and a couple of outside moves that he practices over and over again every day, shoots 15 to 20 times a day. The type of shots you never pass up.

I don't see that in him. With the talent he has if he ever develops those types of things he will be unstoppable.

i'm sure he practices these moves, but he's not allowed to execute them.

against Mich, he went baseline once.. dunked ( barely ) and was obviously fouled.
he also posted up once.. late in the game.. off a set play... jump hook.. missed.

these two moves are options 97 and 99 in the Gopher offense.. no matter if they are there all game long..

rodney is a passive, nice kid... he'd rather not upset the coach by taking shots 'outside the offense' ( not in the top 10 options )..

so he stands there... feigns a look to the post... and passes back to Devoe.

if i'm his defender, i'm filling my pants.. knowing the baseline is open.. knowing Sims will not help on D.. knowing i'm about to be posterized... but Rodney passes back to Devoe.. thank you Jesus!

He's a one tool player, that is why Monson could recruit him. A good 10 -13 minute a game guy.

not blaming Hoff.
i'm blaming the staff and some GHers for thinking Hoff should be our first five options on O.
i've said he's got freakish touch but D2 athleticism.. he should be 'instant offense'... not 'entire offense'.
i give him credit for making the most of his god-given talent... i'm sure he's spent 1,000's of hours shooting on his own.. isn't his uncle Novak from Hopkins? so i'm sure he was raised with a bball in his hands.. plus he's a great kid and a local product.

On a good team, he'd probably get even more shots off and be more deadly. That team would also not rely on him to make 7 threes just to win a game. They'd have other guys scoring too.

Exactly, not sure why this is so hard for some people to understand.

Agreed. A better team and other teams would be worried about other people actually being able to score and they would set more plays for Hoffarber to get better looks. They would actually have players who could find him also. The only player who did a decent job of that was Nolen.
