Here’s a lineup of baseball players who have passed away in the last calendar year:
1B Dick Allen
2B Joe Morgan
SS Tony Fernandez
OF Hank Aaron
OF Lou Brock
OF Frank Robinson
OF Al Kaline
OF Jim “Toy Cannon” Wynn
SP Tom Seaver
SP Bob Gibson
SP Whitey Ford
SP Phil Niekro
SP Don Sutton
SP Don Larsen
Mgr Tommy Lasorda

There are several others-Biff Pocoroba, Bob Watson, Claudell Washington, Ed Farmer, Damaso Garcia, Ron Perranoski, to name a few-who populated my baseball card collection from the late 70’s/early 80’s when I was fully immersed in the hobby. Most of the aforementioned players I either never saw play or it was at the end of their careers, but they lived for me in the pursuit of their cards from the vivid and eye-pleasing Topps sets of the ‘70s and the cheap paperbacks with titles like “Dominant Aces of the ‘70s” that I would read and re-read.

Similar to the music of that time, I came to relish that period of baseball as my favorite era, even if was experienced second hand, at least on a national scale. I guess I have hit the age when the passing of famous names makes me wistful and nostalgic.
