Next year, one can pick out two deeps on the offensive and defensive line without having to insert redshirt or true freshmen! Alex Keith had a surprisingly great true frshmen year for a lowly recruited 2star and now he gets a full year of weight training! Jonah Pirsig and Isaac Hayes don't need to be put in before they're ready. The quarterback we see as the future is the presumed starter. We get to see where Maxx Williams will play. Ra'shede Hageman is still a Gopher!

I am sure others can add to this optimistic thread. Come on! Drink some koolaid and enjoy the off season!

We may have finally got the change of pace/home run hitting back in Edwards, and oh yeah, JEFF JONES committed!!!!

Our coaching staff returns intact

The best back to back recruiting classes in modern Gopher football history. The prospect of the third class being the best ever with Jones as the first commit. Almost another entire recruiting class of walkons at a level equal to some recruiting classes. An athletic director who seems to have a vision to lead us forward.

There are many things to be excited about Gopher football!

It is sort of a good news bad news deal. The good news is the Viking's won't be playing at TCF this fall. The bad new is that we won't have any of their money either. In all seriousness I am VERY confident that we will be a better team this fall. As to how many games we will win I certainly don't know but that is why they play the games. Enjoy the journey!

I agree! Beckyville has a new coaching staff! Chicken Hawks will fire Captain Kirk after the season and Nebraska will probably "replace" Pellini. Go Gophers!!

I know this is the optimism thread.. but don't count your chickens before they hatch.. (or however that saying goes) He's a verbal commit (read: still on the market).

That said, I agree with the Edwards signing and also am looking forward to our OLine staying HEALTHY!

Look at these non-conference games...how can we not get out of the gate fast before taking back the Pig at TCF? We start off (5-0)

08/29/13 vs. UNLV TCF Bank Stadium TBA
09/07/13 at New Mexico State Las Cruces, N.M. TBA

By far the best news in my opinion is that the team that showed up in the bowl game is a team that will match up physically with any Big Ten team. The skill guys may not be there yet but the guys seemed to play with an attitude unseen since Eslinger, Setterstrom, Barber & Maroney were wreaking havoc in the league.

I remember in the lead up to the Rose Bowl this year with UW & Stanford, someone on BIG Network saying, "there is going to be a lot of broken glass on the floor." That's what I think the Gopher game against UW will be this year. If they win it will be the most satisfying game for Gopher fans in many, many years.

Most of that team is coming back and the coaches addressed one of the most glaring weaknesses, linebacker, with two outstanding JUCO recruits. I feel very good about improving our competitiveness on the field. I'm not sure if we'll win more game, but I believe we'll be competitive in every game next year. There might be one where we totally lay an egg, but I don't think we're going see games where we're close at half time only to see our offense not score in the second half while our defense is getting bulldozed because we can't stop the run consistently.

Continuity! Players specifically recruited for our continuing offensive and defensive system! Beer at The Bank!

Seem like good reasons to be positive. Go Gophers!

I am starting to see what Kill is doing with the team. I looked at the 2 deeps going into 2011. (Page 22)

Note that the whole second string on offense contains players who hadn't played a second for the Gophers. The 1st string contained two along with a QB playing that position full for the 1st time.

The defense isn't as in bad a shape with only 1 true freshman in the 1st string and the 2nd with 2.

Here in 2013, freshmen on offense will have to beat out up to three guys in front of them with playing experience. Now, it is the defense that shows opportunity for young players to come in and fight for playing time.

Through the course of the season, Nelson will show himself a better QB than originally expected.

I am completely optimistic on the rate of improvement in the near future. This coming season has 8-4 as a real possibility. In 2014 this will truly be a Jerry Kill team. Beyond this, however, Jerry is going to have to really over-achieve. It is a big step from the middle of the B10 pack to the upper echelon of the conference. Such a step will require the U to step up with even more priority for football I believe.

I feel a very good season coming up. Exciting. Much relies on Nelson's development.

With a year under Nelson's belt....the non-Conference schedule we have to get us out of the gate fast....and then a home game right away to take the Pig back - there should be plenty of optimism!

2013 versus 2012. My guess on two deep newbies

I decided to compare players each year who were in the two deeps (or close to it) with no previous Gopher playing experience:

2012
Brendan Beal
Damarius Travis
Jeremy Baltazar
Martez Shabezz
Roland Johnson
Theiren Cockran
Scott Ekpe
Eric Murray
Alex Keith

Isaac Fruechte
Jamel Harbison
James Gillum
Josh Campion
Andre McDonald
Derrick Engel
Jon Christenson
Joe Bjorkland
Foster Bush
Rodrick Williams Jr.
Lincoln Plsek

For 2013, my guess is the list is shorter:

Mitch Leidner
Jack Lynn
Damien Wilson
DeVondre Campbell
Maxx Williams
Nick Rallis
Isaac Hayes
Yoshoub Timms
?? Dinero Laster
?? Berkley Edwards
?? Eric Carter
?? Drew Wolitarsky
?? Hendrick Ekpe

Besides the obvious weak area at linebacker, Kill should finally be able to red-shirt a high amount of his recruits this time around.

The other nice thing about that list EE is that players like Leidner, Lynn and Hayes are Kill recruits with a full redshirt year in the system under their belts.

I'm trying, I'm trying! But it's hard to see the Gophers winning four conference games - if they do, I'll be very, very happy - but it's a tough road. 7-5 overall?

Iowa - Not a very good football team. They won't be able to pass against us, a good O line but who knows what they have at running back. I am pretty sure they won't run against us like they did last year. Our offense will be much better

Northwestern - We should have won last year. That was the game where Edwards tried to return the opening kick, it bounced off his chest and NW recovered. Mark had a big game for them. Like Iowa, I am pretty sure they won't run against us this year like they did last year. We are good against the pass and our O will be much better this year.

Indiana - I watched the spring game and they are much better but still not quite there. They remind me of TT but without a very good defense.

That brings us to 7 wins - 3 in the big 10. The other win will come from Wisconsin, Nebraska or Penn State. All three teams will take us lightly and will not be up for the game. On the other hand the Gophers will have an ax to grind.

Wisconsin - A good team but a new coach and a new scheme. Limegrover and Claeys are good at exploiting weaknesses and mistakes

Nebraska - Defense is suspect as is their passing game. They still see themselves as the Nebraska of the Tom Osborne years. They are not. They will show up with the feeling that Minnesota should feel privileged to be on the same field as them. Northwestern beat them in Lincoln two years ago and Neb only won by a point last year. Also last year OSU put up 63 points on them and in the B10 title game Wisconsin took them to the cleaners to the tune of 70 points. I predict this will be Bo's last year

Penn State - Same as Neb. They won't take us seriously and this year reality sets in. They will be a down program for a long time.

So... 8 - 4 this year - 4 wins in non-conference and 4 conference wins.

You heard it here first

We will start off (5-0)....After Iowa I would hope we can win at least 3 more conference games.

If I remember it correctly (and it isn't just wishful thinking on my part) Matt over at Fringe Bowl Team (now discontinued, but still there till the lease runs out) did an analysis of coach Kill and company. Matt reported they have a history of taking care of business against lesser and even opponents, and going about .500 against "better" teams. That is what has me optimistic, especially now that the team is starting to shape up to their scheme.

Am I wrong? the D in 2012 was ok but spent more time on the field due to 3 and outs by the offense. If the O is garbage again then it is bottom of the BT again.
