Just 3 years removed from the BCS and now this.

"Losing to a team like Iowa, I think it takes them out of the mix"

"Iowa is the worst team in the Big Ten" Ouch.

Poor Kirk. Fair has got nothing to do with it. I like the idea of Northern Illinois going to a BCS bowl game. I also like the idea of Oklahoma NOT going to a BCS bowl game. I've just become a Husky fan.

I hate Iowa with every fiber of my being, but they weren't the worst team in the Big Ten, not by a long shot. And it's not like Iowa blew out NIU or anything like that. Of course A&M or Oklahoma would be a "better" matchup with FSU, but that's not how the system is set up.

Why are these guys arguing a rule? It's not like the computer's messed up that is the usual argument. It's a rule that has been in place. I don't understand the whining.

The system is the way it is and people have to just deal with it. Teams play the games and have no say in where they end up. The system played out for Louisville, NIU, and Wisconsin. The biggest problem with this system is the human element. I agree with the guys on ESPN and the problem is the peopel who voted NIU and Kent State so high. Seems they just rank by record and no one takes into accound the eye test. If you take NIU and Kent State and put them Head-to-Head against the teams ranked below them, how many of those games would Vegas have them favored? NIU lost to Iowa and Kent State was destroyed by Kentucky.

How many of these teams would NIU or Kent State be favored against? Nebraska, UCLA, Michigan, Boise State, Northwestern, Louisville, Utah State, Texas, San Jose State, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State.

The system works if voters take there votes seriously.

They can rip Iowa, Iowa had a bad year this year. But as far as BCS injustices go, this one (if it is an injustice at all) doesn't even rank. I think that it is fair that the small conferences collectively have an auto-bid they can get so long as the team is in the top 16, especially given that the Big East gets an auto-bid no matter what kind of crap they put on the field.

I agree on the Big East, but NIU is not a top 20 and arguably a top 25 team. They can thank the Big Ten for getting them in by having OSU and PSU sit out this year.

It is what it is. How many times does an average to poor team win its conference tourney in basketball and bump out a team that's way more deserving with a better resume? In the eyes of a lot of voters, a win always trumps a "good" loss.

Those are automatic bids in Basketball. NIU only got an auto-bid because the voters put them in. As a Gopher fan, I'm glad they got in as I think it puts some spotlight on Kill and staff.

I have a bigger problem with a system that lets one conference basically give all its teams a mulligan. To get into the championship game, the Big 12, B1G, Pac12, have to go undefeated. One loss is good enough for the SEC. I'd rather watch Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl than a two loss LSU team in the NC game.

I realize it is changing next year but the way it has been working out is one conference gets to play to determine half the NC game, while the entire rest of the country has to be ranked and scrap it out for the other half. Unless of course you consider last year where the entire rest of the country was even held out of their usual half of the opportunity.

Unfortunately the SEC schedules non-conference games like the Big Ten so we have to go on reputation and the SEC's rep is that they are the best conference. Bowl season is the only chance to knock the reputation down.

I never cheer for SEC teams during bowl season.

The Big Ten's status was irrelevant in NIU getting a BCS bid. They would've gotten in anyway because they finished ahead of Louisville. The non-AQ bid is automatic as long as they're in the top 16 and finish ahead of any of the six AQ conference champions.

Would the be in the top 16 if OSU was eligible? I don't know.

The irony of all of this is that Herbstreit bashes the BCS and says "thank God we're moving to a new system"

Well, dingbat, NIU would STILL get in in the new system! What's sad about college football is that he makes millions to talk about a sport and he doesn't even understand basic things like that.

The rule sucks because a big part of what determines everything involves people voting who probably didn't watch much or any of Northern Illinois this year. They don't have a single signature win.

I think he might be talking about that in the new system we're ensured three marquee games/matchups (two semifinals and championship). This year it would have been Notre Dame-Oregon and Florida-Alabama.

We're lucky for the Oregon-Kansas St. game or this year would have been even more of a disaster. This year, two of the four best games are not even in the BCS (Texas A&M-Oklahoma and LSU-Clemson)

I hope the new system would not establish a setup as inferred above. Oregon & Florida did not even reach their conference title game. That should be an automatic dis-qualifier (similar to how Alabama should have been out of luck last year). If I were to pick the teams for a mythical 4-team playoff this year, it would be Notre Dame, Alabama, Kansas St, Stanford. All won their conference outright and ranked in top 10.

No matter, there will always be people who complain that some "helmet" school didn't get picked for the playoff, similar to how teams "on the bubble" for NCAA BB complain they didn't get in the tourney each year.

Can't say I agree with you there. If you're going to have a playoff system, then have a true playoff system. Pick the four best teams. Look at what all these kind of rules have turned this year's BCS bowls into. Do you really want that to be the case with the playoffs too? I really like Stanford and Kansas St., but neither is more deserving in my eyes. Stanford has two losses and Kansas St. got blown out.

Stanford lost in OT to the #1 team (Notre Dame), beat Oregon and won their conference outright. They should be ranked higher than Oregon.

K-State may have gotten blown out in their only loss, but they also blew out almost everyone in their other wins. They also beat #6 Oklahoma and had 5 total wins over ranked teams.

Oregon has 5 wins over ranked teams, but best win was #15 (oregon st.). They cannot escape the aforementioned loss to Stanford (at home even). They played one less game as well. Please tell me how they are "more deserving" to be in a 4-team playoff?

Florida has 4 wins over ranked teams, with wins over #4 LSU & #7 S.Carolina, but lost to Georgia and was nearly beat by Louisiana-Lafayette. Granted, they play in SEC so they get more pub than other conferences. but again, they couldn't make it to their conference title game. If they had played in SEC championship and lost, they too would be ranked lower and out of BCS like Georgia. So, by your logic, they are getting the benefit of the doubt simply because they played one less game.

As I said, the system is flawed now, and will be flawed when the "playoff" happens. Everyone will still have their arguments. Only that we can guarantee is that there will always be controversy to keep it in the news. That is part of what makes college football fun.

Like I said in the other thread, Kirk Herbstreit is sqwauking because Ohio State is inelgibe to play in the National title game or BCS bowl
because of there past cheating. He is being a whiner, because of his regret that Ohio State his alma matter, can't play in any of the bow games.
He needs to get off his high and mighty horse and give it a rest.

You also left out the fact that they lost to Washington who just gave Washington St. their only conference win of the season.

I agree many of their wins have been very impressive. Still, getting blown out like that when you're in the driver's seat for a NC is never good.

They have one less loss and didn't lose to an average team like Washington.

I agree, the conference championship thing is very tricky. You could also say the same thing about Kansas St. and Notre Dame who didn't have to play the extra game. As for Florida, you could also make a case that not appearing the conference championship hurt them. If they play and beat Alabama, they're playing for a National Championship.

I just think in your set-up there would be too much of a chance several very obvious and deserving teams would get left out of the playoffs.

Just look at last year. The final BCS standings before the bowls were:
1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma St.
4. Stanford
5. Oregon
6. Arkansas
7. Boise St.
8. Kansas St.
9. South Carolina
10. Wisconsin

In your scenario, the four playoff teams would have been LSU, Oklahoma St., Oregon, and Wisconsin. Two teams (Alabama and Stanford) would have been passed up by two teams with more losses. Oregon's extra game last year was against a UCLA team that finished 6-8.

I know the rankings suck a lot of times but unfortunately it's the best we have. Picking the teams that the humans and computers believe are the best four is the best way to go IMO.

This doesn't make sense to me. If this were the case, wouldn't he be whining about the National Championship because that is probably where Ohio St. would be right now if they weren't on probation?
