per the Henry Daily Herald:
“The experience here at Minnesota has definitely been a good experience,” said Jones via telephone, following a recent practice. “I’m surrounded by a great group of seniors. I was a new receiver last year, and everything was all new to me, but the upperclassmen were here to show me the ropes. It definitely made me better.”
A couple of workout sessions with NFL star receiver Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals didn’t hurt either. Fitzgerald is a native of Minneapolis, and has a good relationship with Gophers’ receivers coach Bryan Anderson, and that translated to Fitzgerald, and a handful of other pros, coming on campus to help several Minnesota players refine their skills.
That exposure, Jones said, opened up a whole other room of career opportunities for him.
“I only got to work with (Fitzgerald) twice because I had summer classes,” Jones said. “But whenever I was able to go, I would. Just watching him taught me how to work at running every route full speed. He told me that I’m pretty much in control of my own destiny and my own future, here at Minnesota and beyond.”
That’s why, despite being named to the 2012 Class AAAA all-state team as a quarterback, he doesn’t mind the position switch, and he has no plans of trying to go back.
“I miss quarterback sometimes, just because you had so many chances to run all over the field and make plays,” Jones said. “But I don’t miss quarterback because I know wide receiver is going to take me to the next level.”
