After prolonged struggles to move the ball on the ground — the Huskers have averaged just 3.59 yards per carry and 134.75 per game over the last four contests — Riley would settle for having a couple of running plays that are reliable. Plays that set up a manageable second down. That don’t get blasted right at the line of scrimmage....
“You’re always looking for that in the game of ‘OK, this has been good,’ or ‘let’s get back to that’ or ‘let’s repeat that run,’ ” Langsdorf said. “That’s what’s been tough. Because sometimes we’ve hit something — and then got stuffed a couple times. You’re looking for that run you can hang your hat on, and it’s a go-to call and you’re going to get yards out of it. You’re not going to lose yards. And we’ve been so up-and-down that way in the run game for a few games now. So I think it’s important.”
This week, the Husker run game has received at least some welcome news.
The offensive line appears as whole and healthy as it has been in many weeks. On Tuesday, in the brief time reporters get to watch practice, offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh had his full load of linemen practicing. Last week, it was far more sparse — Tanner Farmer and David Knevel were out, as was at least one freshman, Matt Farniok, who is redshirting.
But Tuesday, he had all of those guys back, plus Jerald Foster, believed lost for the season with a torn MCL. Foster, a sophomore from Lincoln Southeast, was going to be the starting left guard before the injury. He was replaced by Sam Hahn, the healthiest of the linemen this season...
The Gophers give up just 3.34 yards per carry — 16th nationally. No team has averaged more than 5 yards per carry this season on Minnesota. Cavanaugh said he doesn’t watch whole games of opponents — just cut-ups of plays — but he thought Penn State had the most success running the ball. He’s right — the Nittany Lions ran for 4.86 yards per carry. Iowa had a good day, too — 179 yards.
Minnesota’s pressure-heavy style — blitzes on both runs and passes — is the kind of defense that has given the Huskers trouble in recent weeks.
But Langsdorf said he’s committed to making the run game work
