Hawkins gone

Really? why would he switch now? Any idea where he's gone to?

Sad, now we are going to have 2 terrible classes in a row after we fire Brewster next year. Sad sad state of events, nobody to blame but Maturi, the guy serioulsy cannot do one thing right with the football program and I'm convinced he doesn't even realize it.

We could have fired Brewster which is inevitable after next year and still ended up with a similar class as we are going to end up with anyways. Brutal.

Regarding next year, I'm pretty worried at this point. We've lost a bunch of recruits and we're already going to be plugging a lot of holes with inexperienced and young players. On top of that, we're adding another new coordinator to the mix against another difficult schedule. Taking all this into account, it's getting tougher and tougher for me to remain optimistic. I'll still support the team, but at this point I'm really just hoping we're not headed for a trainwreck.

TCU went 12-0 yet averaged only 38,000 fans per home game at 86% capacity, although these "official" numbers are likely generous.

I've been trying not to say this while he was still committed, but of all the guys we have coming in (with one exception) he's the one I thought we'd miss the least. I realized he's talented, but we're in decent shape at WR comparatively speaking. He would have been RS'd, and would scarcely touch the ball for two to three years. I never quite got the hype about this guy for that reason. We've got a better guy we redshirted already.

Don't hear me wrong, I think he was a great recruit, just not as impactful as so many were making him out to be.

Brewster's future will be determined based on how the last two recruiting classes end up performing. Most of this year's class will be too late to help or hurt Brewster much.

True that. And this class is still deep, maybe missing the star power. But as Xtreme points out, the value of this class is really going to be about depth to the overall team in 2011-12.

To some extent, yes. But, if Brewster can't continue to recruit, I'm skeptical that his coaching ability is going to bail him out.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling .

I hope you are right, but I don't have such a positive outlook on the wr's as others do. I think we are fine, but no one is a game changer. The guys returning all have issues with running proper routes. Hopefully they improve, but none are all-big ten type of wr's imo. I think this is a very big loss in perception and talent. I hope you are correct about the red-shirt as well.

One thing Brewster said when he came in is that he thought it was easier to recruit in the first two years. Three and four were the toughest because you couldn't sell the new program message anymore and the results were probably not significant yet to be able to sell. I think we're seeing that. The other thing is that we're not done, only three losses (Huff, Green and Hawkins)dropped this class, it wouldn't take much to get us back.

We have the balance of the skill in the system already to make a strong showing once they mature. If we can get classes in the thirties and maintain depth until we can get the success and stability the better recruits demand we'll be OK.

Crap!

We have weaknesses at numerous positions and will struggle to win many games next year....Brewster's recruiting has declined significantly. I hate to say it but my hunch is that the only true sold out stadium days we will see next year at TCF will be U2 and Dave Mathews (if true). I appreciate the positive views by some on this web site but the truth is that things are looking more bleak everyday.

Every once and awhile I start feeling the same way, then I look and see that compared to the Big Ten our sophmores are doing quite well. We know that these kids improve every year. Still even with that knowledge it's hard to allow for the deficiencies that improvement implies. We'll be decent at the reciever spot.

The soph. mention makes me feel a bit better I guess. We really need one guy to step it up to the next level next year though. With Decker, we were dangerous. Without him, we were pathetic (minus Mich. St.). If all improve, the running game has to get better right??

Bring on Toby Durham? We, along with Purdue, are probably his top two offers. Size and speed similar to Hawkins, but not nearly the offer list.

Does anyone know where we stand with him?

This is a sad occurrence especially when one considers that a couple weeks ago it looked like James Green and Hawkins might be a solid receiver tandem over the next few years. Now both are gone.

The Gophers will host 4 teams that will likely be preseason Top 10 teams.

Regardless of wheather the Gophers are competetive in all of these games or not, people should be interested in seeing college football games like these. If not .... at what point do we just concede that most people in Minnesota are hopelessly fairweather and don't actually appreciate the sport of football?

Everyone in the state seemed to be a Vikings fan yesterday -- yet they couldn't even manage a legitimate sellout of the playoff game they hosted in 2008.

Something's in the air, this thing is going to turn in a BIG way quite soon.

When the change was made uptown
And the Big Man joined the band
From the coastline to the city
All the little pretties raise their hands
I’m gonna sit back right easy and laugh
When Brewster and the Big Man bust this city in half

Even so it's a Viking town....it could be a Gopher town but pathetic to avg play is the name of the game for my favorite team and because of it apathy rules.

Toby's cousin Bouie is committed here (still not sure if he's in school yet or not. He was supposed to graduate early and enroll for the Spring semester), I would think there is a spot for him because they were at one time selling themselves as a package deal.

While I agree with the sentiment about Green and Hawkins and all the other decommits something another poster mentioned last week made me reconsider how I view this class. As fans we like to get all jacked up about flashy recruits that play QB, RB or WR. But football is won in the trenches. We have a solid base in this class with Gjere, Ragoo, Lenkiewicz, Eggen and Epping on offense and Legania, Ferguson, Tauaefa on D. They might not be sexy but I like these guys a lot and believe that they will help us win. So in the end, losing Hawkins sucks but I'm still alright with the class as a whole.

Right now we are about 50th in rivals and worse in Scout. It's time for Brewster to show us if he is a good recruiter or not. I know i'm being cynical but the class of players we have so far are descent and should help us to get eventually to 7th or 8th in the big ten. We have to recruit, develop players and coach much better than we currently are to have a chance at anything other than mediocrity in the big ten and an apathetic fan base in a half filled, really cool stadium wont change until that happens!

You realize we finished in 8th place this year, don't you? And we finished 7th if you only go by overall record, Purdue beat us out in big 10 record.
