My apologies if this has been covered, but I was unable to locate. I understand a new tradition was to have the students remove their caps when entering the stadium under the arch. Can anyone give a report as to how that actually went?

The new "traditions" created by the marketing department will never take off.

You will NEVER hear the student section chant "WE ARE ... MINNESOTA" and some people may take off their hats while getting frisked, but whats the big deal? (I took mine off for a moment)

Fabricating "traditions" to make up for ones we don't have isn't going to get us anywhere. Stuff like students chanting in the stairwell, that will be a tradition. Also, I thought it was very cool that people watched/listened from the Williams grass, that will become a tradition to some degree as well.

The marketing department does a good job but they have to realize they can't get the fans to do what they want, if a chant sucks then students will not do it.

Thanks for your rant. And while I actually AGREE with many of your statements, back to the original question of the post...

I didn't really see anyone do it but most peoples focus was not on following the "new tradition" but dealing with the crazy lines.

Maturi, Bruininks and some others tried to lead/"teach" us the We are...Minnesota chant before opening the student gates but I get the impression that people did not like it. Plus, who leads it? Is some student just going to scream out "WE ARE" similar to "WHO HATES IOWA?"

I hope we students start doing the "WHOSE HOUSE/OUR HOUSE" more often.

I had never heard anything about the "hats off" at the entrance but it's kind of stupid anyway.

That sucks. I hope they get the lines thing figured out for this week. I have to admit, I CAN'T STAND "forced" or new traditions. But I do like that "Hats off" thing. To me, it's respectful to the school, those who have come before, and also is a great tie in to the rouser. It works on many levels.

On the other hand, I HATED the spelling out of "TCF" by the band, and the announcer's forced lines about the points in "the band" and the victory in "the vault". In fact, I actually emailed Maturi about the whole corporatization of the whole thing and how they're pushing the limits of how far they can go without cheapening the experience to some degree.

Traditions need to be OURS. "We are..." is not ours. Maturi responded by saying they were just using the bank type of references because that's how the students have started to refer to the place. I think that's a bit of a convenient cop out. Give it time. New traditions (like the people on the grass by the gates) will come.

I think Jamie's lines were corny as hell, but I think he ran with that on his own. For me, his enthusiasm about it made it a little funny and not nearly as annoying. I'd still prefer they get away from the Bank references but that ship has sailed.

I agree, its sailed, but I really hate those banking quips! After the first loss (yes there will be a first loss) I can hear it now.... Withdrawal jokes, interest charges, reposessions, robbing the bank, blah, blah, blah....

What we are hearing now is fun and cute... deposits, victories locked in the vault, etc....

But I sincerely hope that people get tired of it and something new comes out of the woodwork.... Most fun traditions are created unintentionally anyway, so if you keep your eyes and ears open, you/we may see something good and fun that is not "bank" related in a few years...

Ha ha...hadn't thought about that. Would that mean the hype surrounding Mason's teams was a giant Ponzi scheme?

The best traditions just happen. As I was walking in the stadium, there were people who were touching the big rock. So I touched it too. If enough people do it, it becomes tradition. There are many dozens of "proto-traditions" that are take place, and some of them will catch. The best ones are created spontanously by fans and students.

That said, I like the "Hats off to Thee". It's simple, and there's a visual cue right there on the arch.
