The Boilermakers, though, have finally discovered who they are and what they do well."Regardless of who we're playing and what fronts and coverages we're seeing, here's who we are and here are the things that we're doing well. Let's keep continuing to build on those things," coach Darrell Hazell said.

When Shoop began incorporating more zone reads, Hazell said the offense started to find itself. Off the zone reads, Appleby is a threat to run or pass. He had a 62-yard run at Illinois, a game that saw the Boilermakers produce four long runs.

"We were dropping it off in the flats and just trying to keep teams one half step behind us and just not fitting the gaps correctly because of all the eye candy that we're giving them," Hazell said. "That's what helped us, and it's really starting to develop our identity."

Don't think this week's opponent hasn't noticed.

"I think the quarterback has made some big plays for them," Minnesota defensive coordinator Tracey Claeys said. "The biggest difference is they're not as predictable with this quarterback. He extends a lot of plays with his legs. He's true running threat and he throws the ball pretty good."
