Hard running RB recruit 245 lbs - next Barber?

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if we didn't get him... I don't think he is near fast enough to play RB in the Big 10.

Someone that weighs 245 is the "next Barber"? Interesting...

Also, it is impossible to run like "Barber and Maroney," because they have vastly different running styles. So which one is it?

245 lbs is a fullback not a halfback

Not necessarily. Ron Dayne, T.J. Duckett, LenDale White, Jerome Bettis, etc.

This kid, however, is listed at 4.9 and looks even slower than that on video. There's no chance in hell that he'll ever be a skill position player in D-IA, let alone the Big Ten. If he actually wants to make it, his best bet is to add 20-25 lbs. and play DE.

MB III is 245 pounds?! Was Marion piggy-backing his brother Dom at the time of the weigh-in?

The original post says he runs hard like Barber and Maroney, not that he runs like them or looks like them. If he improves that 40 time I could see him at fullback someplace.

You got to love a guy who's first post is to pump a recruit that we aren't recruiting. Welcome to the board, father/ uncle of the recruit.

That said, I am no judge of talent but I like a guy who has good size/speed and athletic skills. 245 in high school equals 280 in college. 5'11 and 240 but not fat is pretty impressive. He could be a huge full back, or a sparkplug DT (where he also plays).

Man, that kid runs hard like Tellis Redmond and Travis Cole

He seems to lack the explosiveness that would make his size and strength useful at the D1 level. He'll lose his size advantage without the explosiveness (twitch) if he steps up to this level. Maybe it can be developed, I think you'd like to see more evidence of it tho.

All the players you mentioned were either moved to FB or short yardage situations in the NFL because they didn't have the burst to play HB. Yes, a "bigger" back can work in college but I'll take a 200-220 lbs RB that can run a 4.5 40 over a 245 lbs back anyday. The smaller back should have more burst to hit a hole quickly, better breakaway speed, better agility, and with the same line will likely gain more yards over the course of a game/season.

Except Alstott was good.

dpodoll68,

you got that right...alstott was an animal...i saw him twice in the dome...all he did was run gopher defenders over, gain huge chunks of yardage, and score touchdowns...

alstott looked even better than tyler roehl did in the dome...:eek::eek:

that video showed me three things: the kid is slow. he runs straight up and down. the coaches for these teams are terrible (maybe saw one player try and tackle this kid below the knees) most of the highlights were of kids trying to tackle him by the chest

No. All of them are/were successful players in the NFL (some more than others). That some have been used more often in goal line situations recently is a product of the prevailing trend being a 2-back system throughout the league, rather than them not having the "burst" to play HB. The "small" guys run sweeps, screens, off-tackles, while the big guys run draws, powers, dives, etc.

Before the platoon system was the MO, lots of big backs were feature guys. Bettis ran for 13,000+ yards and was a 6-time Pro Bowler. Earl Campbell, Jamal Lewis, Deuce McAllister, John Riggins, Eddie George, Ottis Anderson, Larry Csonka, Marion Butts, Natrone Means, etc., etc. I could go on for a while.

And you say "4.5 40 or 245 lbs" as though they're mutually exclusive. They're not. I guarantee Jamal Lewis and Steven Jackson, and probably more, are at least that big and that fast.

My point is that you can have a big guy be your feature RB, if he is athletic enough. While this guy is certainly big, he is not even in the same ZIP code as fast. Hell, lots of OL/DL currently playing college ball are much faster than this guy.

Funny you mention Earl Campbell. He weighed 245 lbs in HS and his coach asked him to report at 220 lbs if he wanted to run the ball (source: http://www.earlcampbell.com/college_years/college4.html). In the NFL he weighed about 230 lbs.

NFL Weights
Deuce McAllister = 232 (on a 6'1" frame)---215-220 lbs in college
Jamal Lewis = 245 (on a 5'11" frame)--225 lbs in college
Eddie George = 235 (on a 6'3" frame)--225 lbs in college
Ottis Anderson = 220 (on a 6'2" frame)
John Riggins = 235 (on a 6'2" frame)
I figured that was enough. Jerome Bettis weight varied greatly from when he came in to the league as a featured back and at the end of his career and all that I can find is 255 lbs and he wasn't close to that early in his career.

I added the height because all except Lewis need to be taken in to the context that their height is above average for a RB. I don't know if there is an average height for NFL RB's in the last 10 years but I would be willing to bet that it is close to 5'9" or 5'10" or at the max is 6'0". The reason the height is important is because a 5'10" running back (or even 6'0") isn't going to get to 245 lbs with a body fat % that is under 10%--ideal for a NFL RB. As a RB carries more weight he is going to lose quickness and agility while increasing the risk of a knee injury.

And you say "4.5 40 or 245 lbs" as though they're mutually exclusive. They're not. I guarantee Jamal Lewis and Steven Jackson, and probably more, are at least that big and that fast.

It is extremely rare for someone to carry 245 lbs and run a 4.5 40 yard dash or better. If an athlete can do that they are strong candidate to be a first round pick--probably top 10 overall.

NFL Combine times:
Jamal Lewis: 4.37 (but he was only 225 lbs in college and the times in 2000 were hand timed)
Steven Jackson: 4.55 (235 lbs)

Technically neither of them fit the criteria of 245 & 4.5 40-yard dash. Jamal Lewis is up to that weight now but I personally don't believe he runs a 4.5 40 any longer and to be honest neither of us could prove it one way or another so it isn't worth debating. For reference Adrian Peterson ran a 4.40 at the NFL Combine so a 4.5 is still a pretty damn good time. How much quicker & faster is Peterson than Lewis today?

The fact that you picked two big backs that were first round draft picks--and neither of them were 245--says a lot about the frequeny of 245 lbs athletes that run a 4.5 40 yard dash. I'll stand behind my comment that 245 lbs is the weight for a full back and not a half back. I'll also stand behind my statement that I would take a 200-220 lbs running back that can run a 4.5 over a 245 lb RB.

Adrian Peterson: 218 lbs (trying to gain 10-12 lbs but probably will fall short of that)
LaDainian Tomlinson: ~215 lbs

Coincidentally here is a great article on the weight of running backs that ran this week in Sports Illustrasted. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jim_trotter/05/13/adrian.peterson/index.html

This kid, Trevor, is the son of a guy who is a business associate of mine.

It looks like iamhuge is carpet bombing football forums about this kid. I found similar posts to this on sites for Nebraska, Mich St., Florida and Kentucky just by doing a google search on the kid's name.

I agree with the others here. He looks like he might be able to get school paid for by playing at the next level, but I doubt it will be as a halfback at a BCS school.

I fell asleep during the video--did he ever score??? Zzzzzzz...:cool02:

He is getting offers now.

From whom? Amherst? Stony Brook? Yeah, some real bastions of high-level football excellence there.

And I love how the one comment on the old link is from "MSU Asst, [email protected]". Like we're supposed to believe that an assistant from Michigan St. not only viewed this tape, but actually commented on it? Hello, secondary recruiting violations? How gullible do these people think we are?

hey guys...your'e confusing the title of this thread. He doesn't mean he's going to be the next "Marion" Barber, but rather that he has a passion for cutting hair and also likes to play football.

Well, there are other MSU's out there. Montana State, Minot State, Minnesota State, etc. :p

If Minnesota is going to start using a full back again, one with some real ball skills would be nice to have. USC for example just kills people with their FBs in the passing game and play action.
