As someone who thought that the Brewster hiring was a worthwhile risk and was very quickly proven wrong I join the multitudes on the other board who are baffled and disappointed by the Kill hire. It makes me appreciate how lucky we are to have Tubby, how little credit Maturi deserves for the hire, how easily he could slip away and how little confidence I have in Maturi's ability to find a capable replacement.

I support Kill all the way.

But the hire reminds me just a lil of hiring a coach who beat the Gophers in a 'big' game during the previous season.

OUCH !!!

I had not thought of that. Hopefully it works out better this time.

Yup. Just like the T-wolves propensity to trade for a player who goes off on them in one game and does nothing against the rest of the league.

big generalization here but people tend to hire people like themselves. By that I mean, Mr. Maturi sees himself as a small guy that got a good break and made something out of it. So he wants to believe in the next small guy doing the same thing. Admirable trait but the odds aren't always in your favor with this approach.

Let's be honest, Tubby's the only reason Maturi still has a job, which makes it even more ridiculous that Maturi isn't doing more to help on the practice facility. I've got no idea if Kill will be a good coach, but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. However, Maturi made this whole process a total embarrassment.

It was my first thought. We have gone this route before, hiring the "hot" mid major guy that beat us and we failed. To Kill's credit, he has a lot longer track record as a coach than that particular blunder in our sports history.

By the way, thanks for providing a place to comment on the football hire without going to the meltdown on the other board.

I am with Jammer. This is an uninspiring hire by a lame duck AD, who should be set aside to do admin duties only until retirement and get a new guy in with the new president.

+1. I see little chance of the Practice Facility getting out of the starting block anytime soon. The question is, how bad does Tubby want it? Bad enough to bolt. The fact that the contract extension still isn't done after 8 months is alarming. Either the U 'lawyers' that Maturi keeps using as the excuse are inept, Maturi is inept, or Tubby's choosing not to sign it. Quite possibly it is all 3.

My main concerns:
Can Kill deal with the intense pressure and scrutiny that comes with the Big 10?
Can he compete with elite coaches at elite programs?
Are his health issues resolved?

I hope the money saved with the football hire goes to giving the basketball program EVERYTHING it needs to be consistently successful.

Tubby sure gets a free pass around here considering he's never finished in the top half of the Big Ten or won an NCAA tournament game.

Tubby has most of the rabid fan base (us) confident he knows what he is doing coaching and running a basketball program. Steady improvement in play each year and clear upgrades in talent have us believing we are moving in the right direction. The key to success in maintainig loyalty in college sports is having the fan base believe there are better tomorrows. Tubby has given us better tomorrows and continues to have (most of) us believing that tomorrow will be even better.

The football program has not done that, thus empty seats in a beautiful stadium. Without a doubt, the new football coach is a significant upgrade over the last four years. If he can make us believe through his operation of the program and improved success on the field that there are better tomorrows, he will get similar support. He does not have the resume of Tubby and he will not be given the benefit of the doubt by a large number of casual fans especially.

Tubby has done a great job here in getting us from where we were under the last year with Monson to now.

I just think it's funny that if Jerry Kill finishes 6th, 7th and 6th in his first three seasons, he will have a lot more doubters because he didn't win a National Title 13 years ago.

Well stated Holy Man. I like the direction the Gopher basketball program is headed. I just can't shake from my memory how down in the depths this program was 4-5 years ago. It's comforting knowing we have a proven, classy "CEO" heading the program, and one that's not a shyster like Slick Cal. I'm confident the (Big Ten and NCAA) success is coming shortly.

With regards to Jerry Kill, I hope people give him a chance and don't crucify him at the first sign of adversity simply because they don't like the person who hired him.

Minnesota is the toughest job Tubby's ever had in terms of those things - Big 10 is tough conference (top to bottom) and NCAA games are harder to W than ever.

But Tubby must do better - 25 W seasons, Top 3 or 4 in B10, 1 or 2 W in NCAA, etc - going forward.

The reverence towards Tubby is simply amazing. He's accomplished very little here in terms of winning, has had consistent character issues with his players, yet everyone fawns over him. He can finish middle of the pack and lose first round NCAA games in his sleep, why leave?

How many times have Gophers ever had 20+ W in 3 consecutive seasons? (Once. 2008-09-10)

How many times have Gophers ever had 3 straight NCAA appearances? (Never.) Heck, make that 2 straight NCAA appearances? (Three times. 1989 & 90. 1994 & 95. 2009 & 10.)

Consistent character issues with his players? That's absurd.

What part of KY are you from?

He made them relevant a lot faster than I (and most fans) expected, this program was in shambles when he took over. It is tougher to judge success for a basketball team vs. a football team because making a lower level bowl doesn't matter to most fans. I'll agree that the team needs to keep improving, but you have to be nuts if you aren't happy so far.

Are the Hoopsters consistantly selling the Barn out?

How much revenue is being lost by not having this be the toughest ticket in town? It is good to see the good and it is equally important to see what is not so good. There is quite a bit of room for improvement in the number of Big Ten wins vs. Big Ten losses in both Men's Hoops and Football. We all know that Men's hockey is also dropping the puck quite often in 2010.

Who shall we scrutinize re: the short-comings of our three revenue programs? One must look no further than the athletic director. During the past seven seasons, the athletic director has not exactly produced all that he should have considering the horrible management of the new football stadium, the football coaching situation, failure to sell out the Barn in Men's Hoops and lack of interest in Women's Hoops as well as the shocking deterioration of the Men's Hockey Program.

The ad has demonstrated a lack of ability in so many areas of the management of the revenue sports and highest profile sports that actually need to draw the interest of the ticket purchasing public.

Until the Barn sells out every game...untill TCF BANK STADIUM sells out evey game and the people actually show up to help provide a passionate fan base and a home field advantage, the ad must be held accountable and must be pressured to either resign or produce immediately. He has been here since 2002. There has been entirely too much chaos, loss of revenue and loss of opportunity with the revenue sports.

Savor having Tubby, because he's on a one way ticket to Atlanta after the year is done.
