Willie Burton was one of my all-time favorite Gophers. I was tremendously disappointed that he wouldn't take out his earbuds during the hall of fame ceremony. Was listening to his IPod at that moment really necessary? Just an incredibly disrespectful display to the legends around him and the thousands of fans acknowledging his accomplishments.
A BIG thumbs down to #34.

I thought the same thing.

Was Willie one of your all-time favorite basketball players because he was a great basketball player or a great human being?

Either way, it was a sorry demonstration. He's a grown man in his 40's.

He may have had his phones "off" but not removed them from his ears.

He was catching up on FBT's podcast. Don't hate.

are you kidding me?

I felt embarassed for this man. He was being honored by his college at halftime and by many who have never saw him play and he stands there in front of 50 thousand people and represents himself with ear phones on?

I guess listening to Earth Wind and Fire was more important at that moment than graciously accepting warm applause from your alma mata....unless he was wearing them for medical reasons, what a total joke and at his age too?

When they announced Willie Burton I turned to my 12 year old son and told him what a great player Willie was and how much I enjoyed watching him play. Right in the middle of my little history lesson, my son interrupted me and said "Why is he wearing earphones?" I guess that will be his memory of the event.

Why shouldnt we be. That was a show of disrespect for the people of the U of M community. And to think otherwise is base.

Coming from the guy that is irate he can't have a Coors Light for 3 hours at TCF Bank Stadium.

Absolutely precious.

First, I drink Summit EPA. I wouldn't be caught dead drinking a light beer. And second, I am not bothered in the least by not being able to drink beer at Gophers Stadium. The only reason to post in GopherHole is for entertainment purposes only. Nothing of real value goes on here. And you guys entertain the hell out of me with how little you know, and how easy it is to piss you off. ArenaGuy, I just added you to my life list of yokels whom I have encountered. You are far down the list but rest assured that you are on it.

Thanks for offering me the opportunity to clear this up, since I had a lot of questions after the game.

Most people on this board know that I'm Willie Burton and have been waiting for a response here on GH.

I feel terrible! The earbuds were off and I simply forgot to take them out.

Go Gophers!

What else can we think to rip people about? Perhaps someone missed a spot shaving? Socks don't match underwear? Rip away, Merrill, rip away.

I will say this -- I wish most had more passion for Gopher football. Most of the people I talked to today didn't watch the game. They were too busy getting ready for bow hunting, taking out their docks, going to the casino or whatever else they do. Gopher football is a very small world.
