One thing I saw from FIU, they did three things consistently on offense. Spaced the floor, players moving without the ball, and the ball moving. That is a recipe for a very good half court offense. They were able to dribble penetrate, and pass the ball to the inner half. The defense had trouble recovering from doubling the post. The recovery to the close out was a little late, but the technique was good. They were level 3 defense. I think Coach Pitino will want a level 4 or possibly higher. Teams get better when they know the rotations to the shooters. And Coach will probably build the defense from the perimeter spots, and shooters back to the defensive situation. Screens, trapping, doubling the post, pindowns and skip passes.
I think his pressure will come not only in a full court trap, 3/4, and in half court. And he may have 4 or more versions of the trap. You cannot be timid in applying pressure, he used the word aggressive. That will leave a player unguarded. The trap must make that pass impossible, and the rotations to recovery are the key.
I am excited to see a true motion offense combined with pressure defense.
