In 2018, Gus Malzahn stepped up to speak at the Minority Coaches Association of Georgia’s conference and said he had a tough act to follow. He had to speak after P.J. Fleck.

Almost two years later, Malzahn sat side-by-side with Fleck as they held a joint press conference before they faced off in the New Year’s Day Outback Bowl. The two coaches bring entirely different styles to the game, but each had nothing but the best to say about the other.

“I've followed Coach Malzahn for a long time,” Fleck said. “He's one of those guys as a young who you want to be like, one of the brightest offensive minds in all of college football, and it's fun to watch how he evolves.”

Fleck described Auburn as one of the most historical programs in college football. They have a unique running game. Fleck said the Tigers are creative and come at you from different angles and formations. Watching the film, Fleck also noticed how fundamentally sound Auburn is.

“That's when you know a team is well-coached,” Fleck said. “We all know plays, we all have schemes, we all have that, but when you talk about a well-coached team, that's when you talk about the fundamentals, details, technique, playing for each other, and they all do that.”

per Nathan:

Malzahn admires P.J. Fleck's coaching style — and vice versa

Coaches are thieves, as P.J. Fleck put it, and Minnesota's coach has been picking Gus Malzahn's pocket for some time now.

“I've followed Coach Malzahn for a long time,” Fleck said during he and Malzahn’s joint press conference on Day 2 of Outback Bowl festivities in Tampa Bay. “He's one of those guys as a young (coach) who you want to be like.”

And that’s to be expected. Fleck is one of the younger head coaches in college football at 39. But that doesn’t mean Malzahn, who is 15 years older and has been embedded with a Power-5 program on the Plains for 10 of the last 11 years, doesn’t turn around and analyze the fiery up-and-comer’s styles, as well.

“[Fleck], I think, is one of the best coaches in all of college football,” Malzahn said. “I've been a fan of his for a long time because he does it his way and his teams take on his personality. They play with great effort. They're very well-coached. You can watch that with 10 minutes of watching film that they know exactly what to do.”
