Gregg Doyel column on Jameis Winston

For FSU (and many other schools) winning a national championship in football > any embarrassment that might come down on the university. You do the former, you get infinite chances with the latter.

Comments by Jason Sehorn starting at 2:13 explain why Winston acts the way he does. He stood up on a table and yelled something vulgar. It doesn't seem that bad, but who does that kind of thing? I'm just glad FSU and Winston were able to overcome this latest round of 'adversity.'

Wow, Sehorn embarrasses himself. What an awful take by him. That was pathetic.

Go Gophers!!

Not the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I've heard that take by several people, just not as bluntly as Sehorn says here. I disagree with him, but the general thought is portrayed by many.

Some people learn slower, therefor it is okay.

Anyone else getting tired of ex-jocks thinking they are an authority on anything?

I do not yet have an opinion on this matter, and may not ever. But at some point in future, when less busy, I may comment.

Sehorn's reaction here is that of a classic football-factory type of mindset. "He's still a kid," "he's learning at a slower pace," and "we shouldn't be too hard on him" and on and on and on. The amount of excuses guys like Sehorn make for guys like Winston is the reason this crap happens over and over again. Sehorn and others like him like to think they're educating him and helping him grow up while in fact, this so-called kid continues to do stupid (and sometimes illegal) stuff every few months or so. Like others have said, it's sad and pathetic.

I decided to investigate what he said.
Here's some context.
Here's some more.

Of all the memes he could scream standing atop a table in the student union, he chose that? "IT'S OVER 9000!" would have been the safe bet...

I could barely keep watching the FSU vs. Clemson game Saturday night. It didn't feel like I was watching a game - I was watching the Winston show on the sideline, and the game was the sideshow. And even Herbstreidt, who I normally like, talking about what a leader Winston is ("encouraging his teammates on") - barf.

This was a great article. Thanks for posting.

Anyone know where I can find a good price on crab legs?

You can tell FSU really has no control over the kid. I mean what team suspends a guy and then lets him take part in pre-game warmups and be front and center on the sideline?

I didn't watch the game myself, but this Deadspin link shows how much screen time Jameis Winston got during the game. Apparently he was on screen for 8 minutes, or 5% of the broadcast.

Interesting. It's funny that when a fan runs on the field during a game, the networks all avoid showing it on the broadcast because they don't want to reward the idiot with the attention he is craving. But when the star athlete acts like an idiot, they do the opposite and give him exactly what he craves: more attention.

All I know is I will be rooting hard against FSU for quite a while because of this jackass and his antics.

A nice summation. By most accounts Jimbo Fisher is known as a quality individual, but clearly has has no control over Winston. Winston is just stomping all over Fisher, Florida State University, and anyone willing to stand in his destructive path.

I'm with you; it will sicken me if Winston gets another Heisman and/or FSU is part of the 4-team playoff, which is very likely (the playoff, not the Heisman, I think the voters will speak loudly against him). I will root vociferously for anyone FSU plays from here on out, even if it's a SEC school. Winston represents all that is wrong with the pampered, "You're the greatest thing in the world, and feel free to get away with anything" athlete that we too often see in big-time athletics. Somebody needs to say to the dude, "This is not acceptable." Clearly, Fisher/FSU won't do it. Winston puts Johnny Football to shame.

FWIW, FSU often has suspended players dress and warm-up for games. No one ever cared until Jameis Winston. And no one would have cared (or noticed probably) had Jimbo not made him go back in and change.

The guy clearly has some maturity issues, but the pads thing is a ridiculous example to cite for that. It's more people who dislike him for other things reaching for new examples to use.

Standing on a table and yelling what he did after sexual assault allegations? That's a much bigger issue than putting on some pads.

The pads are certainly the least of Winston's issues. I would hope that's pretty apparent.
