per Bobby:
The Greg Schiano coaching tree has continued to branch out through the years as the Rutgers head coach is now seeing more of his previous assistant coaches go on to do big things in the coaching world. Schiano will face one of those former assistants this season when Rutgers travels to Minnesota for a road contest on Oct 29th. P.J. Fleck is now heading into his sixth season as Minnesota head coach and is coming off a 9-4 season that closed with a Guaranteed Rate Bowl victory over West Virginia.
While Fleck has made a name for himself, another former Schiano assistant is taking the recruiting world by storm. This past December, Mario Cristobal took over the head coaching job at Miami and now has the No.10-ranked 2023 recruiting class as Cristobal has landed seven four-stars and a five-star already.
“Mario is a dear friend and I was really happy for him when he got back to the University of Miami,” Schiano said during a Monday interview with Larry Blustein on South Florida High School Sports Radio. “He had a great situation out at Oregon, but Miami is home for Mario and he is doing a great job as is PJ Fleck out in Minnesota. You could tell early on. I knew Mario was going to be a head coach, I knew PJ was going to be a head coach. Those guys are special. They have that ‘it’ factor. Other than the days we are playing them or recruiting them, I am always rooting for them.”
