per the Green Bay Press Gazette:

"I sent my film to upwards of 90 (NCAA) Division I schools," Mortell said. "My mom was on a first name basis with the lady at the post office. She was there every day.

"My dad was always a guy that would never give up on stuff. He's actually the reason I ended up at Minnesota. I sent them my film and they never sent anything back. But he kept telling me to resend it in because they were in the middle of a coaching change. I sent it in five times before they sent something back."

Mortell recalls he was shopping at Best Buy on his birthday when he received a call from Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill, who offered him a preferred walk-on spot.

Mortell hopes he can help Minnesota win the Paul Bunyan Axe for the first time since 2003 when it plays its regular-season finale on Nov. 28 against Wisconsin.

"He's just somebody you want to be around," Emnott said.

"He wanted the challenge of performing at a Division I institution because he was confident he had that ability. I think that same self confidence and work ethic is what is going to make him a successful pro. It's a long battle, and it's an uphill battle, but he's willing to do what it takes to get there."
