I think just the opposite, MNVCGUY. The NFL is such a "What have you done for me lately" type of league, that Carter's senior year would have got him an invite to Indy.
The position means nothing at all when he gets to the combine they may ask him to run routes with the recievers. In all honesty Gray has little chance to be drafted unless he pulls off a terrific combine. I dont think he has the speed to be an NFL WR so his best shot it at TE where he has very few skills that will translate to the position. I still believe Michael Carter has the best shot to get drafted out of any Gopher player and I dont think its all that close. I dont see it all that likely either. Gray to me is an overhyed athlete at this point with no real position and years away in the skill department to become a top quality NFL player.
I agree with you on Mike Carter; he has the skill set and mental make up to play CB at the next level. The question for him will be long speed. I believe if he runs in the 4'5 to 4'6 range he will be drafted. He doesn't have to run a 4'4 he just needs to not run a 4'65 or higher (IMO).
Gray? Folks for some reason believe it's about production or talent at the NFL level. In the money rounds maybe. After round 4 teams are looking for that diamond in the rough. Gray could certainly be that diamond. The fad in the NFL is that seam busting TE who can get down the middle and take Lb's with him. Gray just needs to run in the mid to low 4'6 range to be that guy. If he does I think someone will draft him.
Carter is the only other guy who might have had a shot out of this current group. Not shocked he didn't get an invite. He could still get drafted if he has a great pro day. He had a nice year this past season but it is really the only good year he has had so he will have to prove himself to really get noticed by the guys at the next level.
I would assume Gray has been or is training specifically for the combine. He is the kind of physical presence that should test really well in the measurable stuff. On the football side of things teams will know going in that he is a project but unless he tests out really badly someone will draft him and try to make something out of him based on size/speed combo.
