I know everyone is high on the kid but I would temper that enthusiasm. He doesn't look natural passing it IMO and has really not impressed me there. He can't be any worse than Weber, but that doesn't mean he'll be much better, either.

I really hope Alipate can do something or the position will continue to be a weakness IMO.

I agree he's a major project. A tip for you kids at home: always watch the feet.

He has no idea what he's doing out there.

All I know is that he must look absolutely horrible in practice if he can't get playing time over Adam Weber.

and what's scary is he still looks better than Weber in games (even if he throws once every two games).

He doesn't even know what he's doing when he runs. He just...goes.

Look who he has as teachers. I'd transfer.

I almost agree with you. If I was him I'd be considering it. This system is the biggest joke in the world. The Iowa coached even admitted that they were going to key on him when he was in the game because they knew all he does is run. No creativity at all. For a second today I almost wanted to give Weber the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to horrible coaching, but then a buddy of mine tossed some water on me and I came to my senses.

Agreed he hasnt looked great throwing the ball, but we are basing that on his throwing on reverse passes and throws on the run. He may not be much of an improvement over Weber but he has an upside. We know what Weber is, we have no idea what Gray could be.

Gray should get every snap between now and the bowl game and then take every snap in the bowl game. Let's see what he can do. No point to playing Weber again, especially with this long of a layoff to prepare. If Weber starts, it should be the final nail in Brewster's coffin.

Gray speculation

Anyone here ever hear how Gray looks in practice? I don't recall a post here or on the strib blog.

We all assume Gray should be getting way more snaps but is he ready? The last thing we need is to throw him out there just because Weber has issues. If people are complimenting his practice time, that's one thing. If not, that tells me he is not ready and the coaches are doing the right thing by spot playing him.

In addition, I have not heard of any player(s) grumble or compain about Weber's performance. If they were, word would likely get out. Maybe they all realize Weber is our best option.

I think everyone is ready to see what Gray can do if he drops back 30 times. But I don't think he'll look all that fluid in the passing game. At least when someone isn't open or the pocket collapses he can take off and run, which is something Weber isn't very good at.

Hard for the kid to gain any sort of consistency when he's only in for a snap here and there. It's maddening; I'd rather see 4 drives of ALL Weber and then one drive of JUST Gray than to see this BS where he's trotted out for (what 90% of the time is) a draw play. We haven't seen him REALLY step up in the pocket and be able to throw the ball. Look at today; only one real pass from the pocket that wasn't a trick play. Don't call him a project until he's getting snaps on consecutive plays on a consistent basis. If he goes out for 3-5 drives a game and performs like Weber then we can say "man he sucks".

hope he stays

How do you expect the kid to improve or gain any confidence when he gets 10 snaps a game? It's extremely difficuly to get any sort of momenum when you get one snap, then sit for 3 series. The coaching staff is making him an incredible project by using him sparingly and not giving him any lengthly experience. I wonder how it feels to watch the starting QB under perform regularly, and not be given the opportunity to show what he can do. How about Tubby puts Rodney Williams in, lets him run up and down the court twice, then take him out for 10 minutes. I bet that would help his career. This is an incredible waste of talent. I would love for Gray to stay at the U, but I wouldn't be surprised if he looked elsewhere and went to a team that will utilize his talent.

Grey has to be able to run a series or so. It is not fair to him to go in for 1 play and be expected to get into a flow, same with the RB's. He did well against OSU, second team granted, but team had a good rhythm.

What was with the coaches' stubbornness this year with not letting Weber run? He was a decent runner the past two years and they totally took that away from him this year. Was it for fear of him getting hurt? Was it Fisch being stubborn about running an NFL style offense where the quarterback never runs? Seems like letter Weber have the freedom to run would have opened some things up.

You need to let him get in a rythm and have multiple series before we judge how much of a project he is. When he runs he is fluid like a mike Vick. I also think he throws a nice ball. I saw nice throws in the spring game and in the army all American bowl. He will be very good in time (hopefully next year starting)

no way

There is no way that Gray transfers. He will have EVERY POSSIBLE opportunity to win the starting job in spring ball. If he improves at all it won't even be an issue, and MarQueis Gray will continue his eventual development into the next Vince Young, or at worst Tyrod Taylor

I wouldn't put Gray into the same category as Vince Young; Young is a very special athlete. He is Young-esque, though. I just do not trust we have the coaches to put him into the situations he can succeed.

Folks, this isn't that hard to understand. Gray needs to play multiple SERIES, not multiple snaps. This quasi-2QB system we're running is the reason Gray looks so uncomfortable. He's clearly been told to go in and make a play, yet hang onto the ball at all costs. He's thinking way too much. In the one full series we've seen him play, he looked confident, fluid, and sure of his decisions. There is no way to get into that sort of a rhythm when you're looking back to the sideline to see if you're getting pulled. You cannot judge his abilities or whether or not he should be playing solely on the sporadic plays we've seen thus far. Look at the effectiveness in the full series he's had.

I've been a huge Brewster supporter, but the way he's using Gray is turning me on him.

Gray is a dual threat QB, but he doesn't get enough opportunities to throw the ball and get in a rhythym. Only time will tell how good he can be, but I've had enough of Weber.

Agreed. His full offensive series at the end of the OSU game was excellent. 2nd team defense or not, he was sharp, and his throws were on the money with zip. He'll have his day to show what he can do.

What was with the one play where Weber threw the ball to Gray? I'm not too excited about our quarterback of the future catching passes out of the backfield.

It was a brilliant 4 yard pass on 3rd and 10. Didn't get that one at all. Did they think no one was going to cover him?
