per the Grand Forks Herald:
Now that the college hockey season has begun, Herald readers should ask any UND hockey fan—whether casual or rabid who is the team's biggest rival.
Without a doubt, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers would be the answer. Does the opposite hold true? That's highly doubtful.
The University of Minnesota dropped UND and the other Western Collegiate Hockey Association members for the U of M's Big Ten allies to form the Big Ten hockey conference, as those teams are rivals in all sports. Financial considerations of the Big Ten Network also played a role.
The University of Minnesota has home-and-home, successive-night series scheduled with the University of Minnesota-Duluth, for bragging rights as to the best U of M team; St. Cloud State;the Interstate 94 series probably has the most media attention of any hockey series in Minnesota; and Minnesota State University. Mankato just a short drive down the Minnesota River Valley to Mankato. UND is not on the Gopher schedule at all.
The Gophers were among the large-institution, Division I schools that opted out of scheduling UND in all sports (except hockey) until the logo/nickname issue was resolved.
The UND/U of M rivalry was of long standing and was highly competitive to be sure. But given the evidence mentioned above, it's doubtful that the Golden Gophers would consider it their "biggest."
