Looks like Mr. One Trick Pony is back. This outta make for a lot of hijacked and dead-end threads.

If by one trick pony you mean a long time fan/season ticket holder that expects this experienced team in year 6 of tubbys tenure to win a lot and win big, then yes, you are correct.

Why the lack of confidence elamin? Do you disagree with the 8 ranking?

I don't pay much attention to rankings until mid-to-late Feb. Never have, never will. If we are 8th come Feb. 8, then I'll start to believe the hype. I bet we'll be closer to 25-30 than we will be 8 on that date.

I tend to agree that I would bet MN would be closer to 25 than 8 come Feb 8th. Too many tough games in the B10. They would probably have to start off in the 7-3 or 8-2 range their first 10 games to be ranked #8 that late in the year. (Not sure exactly how many games are played by that date) but a couple wins are the difference between #8 and #20

If\when we beat Mich St. tomorrow....Top 10 in all polls!

We'll be top 10 before that with Mizzou and Cincinnati losing. Not that it's real important now.

For me, it's more about the fun of potentially having a single digit number next to our name. Would be the first time I've seen it on TV.

Early season prediction ranking based on OOC play is about as meaningful as predicting the next great earthquake. I prefer to wait until the ground has settled some, before seriously believing the predictions. Although, it is nice to see that # next to the Gophers. It's been a long time coming! Go Gophs

Ok, let's set the record straight. About every 5th post on every ranking thread ever started is a comment about how meaningless the rankings are. It is not eye opening, clever, or insightful when people talk about how meaningless the rankings are before conference play begins. Everyone here is well aware of that.

We simply use them for the purpose of trash talk, and the enjoyment we get from the national attention. That's it.

Having said that, I still expect a barrage of "Rankings don't matter" comments in about an hour and a half when the rankings are released.

Ya, I can't figure that out. Rankings don't matter but they comment on the rankings.

Up 1. Nice. Crossing fingers that the same is true for AP.

I agree 100%!! That it is neat, fun, exciting etc., to see our team ranked. I didn't realize that it was just "trash talking." Ok, let's all have some fun and enjoy our ranking, but I will cherish our ranking more when the end of February rolls around. IMHO GO GOPHERS

Lack of confidence in the team and the coach. It ok -just admt it.

ESPN has the Gophers at #10 in their Power Rankings with a similar pic on the men's basketball frontpage. Here's their snippet on the Gophers.

"Tubby Smith has more athleticism in his backcourt than he's ever had during his time at Minnesota. That's been the difference for this Minnesota program. Joe Coleman, Austin Hollins and Andre Hollins can score and defend opposing guards in ways that past Gophers backcourt units couldn't. Trevor Mbakwe is back in the starting rotation after suffering a torn ACL last season, and the Gophers have the nation's top offensive rebounding percentage."
