Hoops Season to Get Underway at “Gopher All-Star Friday Night”

A new twist on an old tale. The University of Minnesota men’s basketball program will officially begin the season by hosting “Gopher All-Star Friday Night” on Oct. 14 at Williams Arena. The event, formally known as “Midnight Madness” and “Tubby’s Tip-off”, will feature the 2011-12 Gopher roster as well as many former Minnesota Basketball alumni. A complete alumni list will be released via the Minnesota Basketball Twitter page (@MNGopherHoops) at a later date.

“Gopher All-Star Friday Night” will have the look of NBA All-Star weekend and feature a skills competition, a three-point competition, a dunk contest and a scrimmage. The three-point competition will have a team format with one alumni and one current Gopher making up each team.

The entire night’s schedule is below. The Williams Arena doors will open at 6:30 p.m. in preparation for the evening’s first event.

Also included in “Gopher All-Star Friday Night” will be the half-court shot contest. Fans will randomly be chosen and given the name of a current Gopher player. The player will shoot the shot and if made, the fan will win a Gopher Basketball prize pack. All fans chosen will be given a ball autographed by Gopher players.

The Gophers open the 2011-12 schedule on Friday, Nov. 11 against the Bucknell Bison at Williams Arena. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:00 p.m. Minnesota will also host a pair of exhibition games, Nov. 1 vs. Bemidji State and Nov. 7 vs. Augustana College. Both games are set to tip at 7:00 p.m.

Gopher Men's Basketball season tickets are on sale now. Tickets for the 2011-12 season are available by calling 612.624.8080 or 1.800.UGOPHER or online at www.gophersports.com or www.mygophersports.com.

Go Gophers!!

I've never been to Midnight Madness/Tubby's Tip-Off before, does it cost money? Can I get in free as a student?

It's free to everyone

Unfortunately, since this is the UofM athletic department, this thread is about the best marketing I've seen for the event. I've talked to other season ticket holders and no one has had a clue about what happens that night, what time the event is,etc. Too bad. This should be (but probably won't be) a well attended event and the U should be making it better known.

Yeah pretty much. I would think The Daily would cover it so you'll see a good showing from the student population. I found out about it because of Facebook, but I can only assume that the octogenarian faithful that encompasses most of the crowd won't have a clue unless they hear it from Sid or in a paper somewhere.

Oh well, better seats for me!

We're finally at the doorsteps of the season.. season tickets are being mailed out starting today. I need to start planning out signs for the visiting teams.

Re: Friday night, remember that 7pm is an autograph session.. the on court antics are scheduled for 8pm.

Since the U is doing a kind of poor job of marketing this, everyone get on facebook, twitter, e-mail, regular mail, LinkedIn, AIM, Skype, Myspace, Google+, whatever it is you may be using and help make this years Tip-Off the best of the Tubby Smith era!
