Hageman Named To 2013 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List
Senior Ra’Shede Hageman was named to the 2013 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List today by the Maxwell Football Club.
The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995. It is named after Chuck Bednarik, who is a member the College Football Hall of Fame (1969) and the NFL Hall of Fame (1967) after standout careers at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Hageman, who checked in at No. 2 on Bruce Feldman’s annual Freaks List, is one of 75 defensive players named to the pre-season list. He is one of 14 defensive tackles and one of 11 players from the Big Ten on the list.
Hageman enters his final year of college football after a breakout junior season which saw the 6-6, 311-pound Minneapolis native record 35 tackles and six sacks.
Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Oct. 29, while the three finalists will be unveiled Nov. 25. The winner of the 2013 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City on March 7, 2014.
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's selection committee, which analyzes both past performance and future potential. The Club reserves the right to make additions and deletions to the list as the 2013 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, FBS head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the award.
