McDonald Will Not Participate In Bowl Game

Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill announced today that freshman wide receiver Andre McDonald will not participate in the 2012 Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas because of a violation of team policy.

McDonald played in eight games this year and made 10 catches for 121 yards.

Now, this brings up a question. Will Andre pull an A.J. Barker and send a scathing 4000 word message and decide to transfer because he, his mom, and his mom's best friend don't like Coach Kill's methods of discipline?

*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#ty. hopefully some of the rumors aren't true, and that he's still on the team.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into something major.

He basically flunked out.. Idk if he is suspended or kicked off the team at this point I think it's just suspension right now. Heard he needs to get his act together too, not to popular among teammates

Don't the coaches have people on staff who keep track of these things? How does a kid basically "flunk out" with so many people riding his a*s? It's beyond disappointing...

Hopefully, he can pull a Michael Carter and get himself back on track.

DITTO.

He will be a difficult project somewhat cognizant of the road he had traveled. I am hoping Coach Kill's magic will help this kid turn his life around.

It is entirely up to him to turn his attitude around. He has a lot of growing up to do and fast. Four years will be gone in a blink of an eye.

It will be the greatest Christmas Story in Gopher Land if he is able to overcome his adversities. His destiny is in his hands. He is is in a good place where he can get a lot of quality help.

It's called "personal responsibility". It's relatively easy for anyone to fake it until finals, although I think that this is the real reason he was not playing.

If he wants to throw it all away, there is no one that can help him, except Andre McDonald.

Grow up McDonald.....don't piss all that talent away.

Is this the new spin on "academically ineligible?" I note that Texas Tech announced three of their team members are also not going to suit up because they "broke team rules."

Well, Coach Kill did need some help from Carter's Uncle, who still has a lot of pride (rightfully so) in regard to his playing days at the U. Hopefully someone will help step in on McDonald since the coaching staffs exhortations have failed to this point.

Oh ya, now blame Kill's Staff for Andre's *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# up. Typical A.J. syndrome.

Yes, it is all the coaching staffs fault that he isn't passing his classes. Didn't know the coaches studied, went to class AND took the exams for him. Come on man, what ever happened to personal responsibility?

That's only in the SEC.

Ahhh....no, I actually was not trying to pin it on Coach Kill and his staff at all. I was simply trying to point our they needed help getting Carter on track...As for the Barker fiasco, if you check my posts concerning him, you would notice I basically pinned that one all on him.

see response to Dr. Don.

It is not a new deal. Teams have been using the ambiguous "broke team rules" excuse to cover grades, drugs, legal problems...you name it for years. Coaching staffs do everything possible to keep the details in house and just hang the generic excuse out there for the fans and media.

Can you even flunk out in one semester? Seems like you have to go on academic probation for a semester before you can get the boot. This looks like Coach Kill being proactive and trying to give McDonald a wake up call.

It's probably a team policy that you can't have an F in a class or something. Or have to maintain a 2.0 for example.

Here's to hoping that this is a wake up call for Andre and not an "I don't need to take this" type of moment for him. Would hate to see him leave.

Does this automatically mean he's not travelling? If not, then it will be interesting to see if Andre is on the sidelines or not.

He didn't travel with the team. He is back in MN

He was at the Rec Center yesterday so he is not with the team. I really hope he can get it together. He was starting to come on at the end of the season.

Not sure how much he was coming on but clearly with what we currently have in the WR core he was one of the best options for the future so hopefully he can get his act together and remain on the team. Assuming it is academics it is sad that there are guys that still can't cut it even when given access to all the things that athletes have access to in terms of tutors and academic counseling. The kid still has to put in the effort though, show up and do the work.

I don't know whether he will or not -- but this story is about McDonald's misbehavior, not Barker's. Deflecting attention doesn't explain why a kid would throw away a chance to play in a bowl game and let his teammates down by breaking a team rule.
