Gophers to open 2010 @ Middle Tennessee

They were the power of the Sun Belt earlier this decade. Have since lost that spot to Troy and are now around the middle of that conference.

This must be the big announcement Maturi has been waiting to announce! WE ARE, MINNESOTA!!!!!

(sarcasm)

A Thursday game! :eek::eek:

I guess it gives us a couple extra days to prepare for South Dakota.

I like the choice though. Its not an extreme cupcake (like South Dakota), but nothing too intimidating either (like USC).

I hope the fourth 2010 OOC game is somewhere between the level of Middle Tenn and USC like a mid-level BCS team. We have a Pac10 team, so id like to see a Big12, ACC, or Big East squad.

Oklahoma State, Virginia (who also plays USC in 2010), NC State, and a few others have openings which might fit.

As posted below, the Gophers will open the 2010 season on Thursday, September 2nd in Murfeesboro.

Middle Tennessee will come to TCF Bank Stadium in 2017.

actually, this should have been contracted the other way around. they visit tcf stadium in 2010 and then WE back out of the return game that is scheduled for seven years later.................wtf maturi?! am i over-reacting here or is MTSU is pretty legit program for "their" level? honestly, i have no clue in regards to the school or athletic program.

I think you'll like the announcement in the morning...

Agreed. Over 7 years it is likely they will get other offers and possibly offered more money to play elsewhere.

I don't know a ton about the program other than Maryland went down there and lost to them last year. I don't see a lot of benefits to this arrangement other than they will almost definitely get ESPN coverage on a Thursday night.

I may be wrong, but I believe them coming here next year was not possible due to the State Fair restrictions in place the next few years.

2010 Nonconference Schedule:

Thurs., Sept 2: @ Middle Tennesee State :(
Sept. 11: University of South Dakota :(
Sept. 18: USC
Sept. 15: Northern Illinois :(

I guess that if it helps us beat USC or have a better conference record, the games versus these cupcakes will be worth it. I can understand South Dakota (everyone plays one FCS team) and MTSU or Northern Illinois - but not both. Like most of you, I was hoping for a Kansas, North Carolina State, etc. But I guess at this late hour we had to take what we could get.

We could've lined up Bemidji State, Macalaster and Hamline for all I care.....USC at the Bank trumps everything.

They weren't going to toss another BCS team onto the schedule with us already facing USC. My hope was for a top flight MAC. Maybe N. Illinois will be top flight by then.

Maybe N. Illinois will be top flight by then.

Their result on Saturday (at wisky) will give us a good indication of the direction they are headed. Ill keep my eye on it for sure.

Isn't Clint Brewster playing at MTSU now? I think he is, that will be an interesting storyline for the week.

EDIT: Guess not, my bad

A home-and-home with Middle Tenn with the return-trip almost a decade out? And this is the tune-up game for USC? I don't get it.

Middle Tennessee has been scheduling 2 for 1's with every other BCS-conference opponent. There has to be a lot more to this than what we know so far.

Goldmember,

The Gophers were a little bit stuck. They had to play on the road that game because of the fair. We're less than a year out.

Middle Tenn. had some leverage and took advantage of it.

Bingo.

OK, was just on Gophersports.com and they show us hosting New Mexico State in 2011 (think this is new) and going to North Carolina in 2013. Wonder when UNC is coming here. Maybe I just didn't go far enough out.
