The Gophers have received a commitment from Ontario offensive tackle Tyrell Lawrence. He chose Minnesota over offers from Massachusetts, Indiana, Tennessee and Howard. Lawrence is a powerful offensive lineman with a 6-foot-7, 344-pound frame. There are several plays on film where he gets inside hand position and drives a defensive end to the turf. Lawrence is a force in the ground game and helped pave the way for numerous explosive runs. He plays with excellent strength, leverage and power. He’ll need to polish up his pass protection sets, but he’s another offensive lineman with unique traits that can be developed.

Here’s a look at his film:

When I watch these highlight videos, I always feel a little bad for the 180-220 lb kids responsible for taking on a 345 lb beast.

Congrats Tyrell!

This is a Mack Truck!

Welcome, big fella. Back in the Bold North!

Every highlight looks the same...him finishing his block 10-12 yards down field. Two thumbs up on the background music too.

Love it, need some OL depth. I like the way he plays to the whistle.

We definitely seem to be much more active with international recruits with this staff then we ever have been in the past. Seems like he might be a bit of a project but considering we don't have immediate needs along the offensive line that is not a problem.

Edit - I see that he was in Florida most recently so maybe doesn't qualify as international but point still stands :)

Great pickup! Welcome to Gold Country!

He'll need work on his feet and quickness (like a lot of guys his size do) but the killer instinct is clear on tape. Glad he's on our boat!

Excellent and Elite choice by Lawrence. He puts time in on footwork he is going to be a great Big 10 tackle. Go Gophers.

Some of those kids look 150 to 170lbs. Football in Canada is not even football in Minnesota. I'm sure the coaches know that and still like his size and obvious malice. But, he will be a project because he may never have blocked a guy over 250lbs, quicker than he is and well coached.

Do you even look at profiles. Doods been playing in florida

He plays in Florida.

His school is an interesting one...a small private Scientologist academy. The school was playing 8 man football just a couple years ago. They also have a Clemson WR commit from Alberta named Ajou Ajou and seem to have put out quite a few international P5 players the last couple years.

Additionally he camped here and coaches got a live evaluation.

Scouting Report
Well, Lawrence is huge, for starters. At 6’7”, 344-lbs, he is a mammoth offensive lineman, and his physical skill set was on full display when he camped with the Minnesota coaching staff back in June. Alternating between playing tackle and guard during camp, Lawrence used his frame to maul defensive linemen. The catch with Lawrence is that he is still a bit raw. He needs to be more consistent in his pad level and will need to work on refining his technique at the college level. But all the physical tools are there. Leave the rest to offensive line coach Brian Callahan.

I am sure he will benefit from a red shirt and then another year after that in development, and you'll have yourself a ready to drive Mack Truck!

Interesting. They were 8-2 this year, and played several teams with good records. I don’t know Florida football enough to know the level of competition on their schedule. Yeah, they won back to back 8-man state championships in 2014-15, and had similar success in 6-man and 7-man prior to that. They must be doing something right down there. Probably a good contact for PJ to have.

I love the way he plays to the whistle. Nice pick up!

a Clemson WR commit from Alberta named Ajou Ajou...

I wonder if he is sick of the "Gesundheit" jokes.

Man this global warming is worse than I thought! Palm trees are now sprouting up in Canada! It looks the same there as when I'm driving through Pinellas County!!

Florida football is known to be weak though...right?
