Go Gophers!!

"That's not good." Really?!

This is more than just bad luck, sorry to say.

That's a by-product of having no inside presence.

Guards have to come down, then boom, open 3.

You're probably right, but the team last year, which had more of an inside presence, also seemed to leave three point shooters open too often (although probably not this badly as this season). I often think they do too much help defense on the interior. That didn't hurt them too much against OK State but killed them against SDSU. Might kill them against Indiana as well.

During the SDSU game, DeAndre Mathieu tweeting something about knowing why the Gophers 3-point defense was so bad, but he "wouldn't tell" why. Amelia re-tweeted it, but it was never explained. I was pretty curious about that...

Believe the tweet was in response to why the Gophers jump at every three point attempt and pump fake constantly putting them out of position and having to scramble.

My guesses would be Pitino teaches them to close that hard. Pitino gets really mad when they give up threes so they close harder than they need to. Pitino wants those shots deflected for run outs. The players just can't figure out when to jump and it drove Dre nuts. Or Pitino believes the higher you jump at random times in a game means you get more points.

Just a few theories.

Deandre always impressed me with his smarts and sense, which came across when he was interviewed. I think of him like Bobby Jackson - someone who's smarter than they seem at first blush. Jackson has gotten into coaching, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Deandre do the same eventually.

A reasonable theory... Amelia or someone should try to find out. This trend of horrible 3 pt defense is aggravating.

King is the only one who "pump fakes" on a very consistent basis and coach Pitino said last year that drives him crazy, or something along those lines. What we're not doing a good job on D is, 1. Checking the opponent on the perimeter nor are we good at 2. Arcing the opponent on the perimeter. Also on offense, since we lack a true post player, we rely on the perimeter players to have to find a way to penetrate against much taller players then not finding our guards/forwards either underneath or on the wings to dish the ball to for either an inside dunk or further out for a perimeter shot. As far as offensive rebounding, the only player we have presently that is quick/skilled enough to get inside position is Murphy with 78 rebounds followed by Morris, Konate and Buggs. As I've stated before, the lack of skill players at the 4 and 5 is the difference between a 5-5 team and a possible 7-3 team.
