I got “page not found” on that.

There are a few power polls, rankings, etc. out in front of the two main polls that are recognizing the Gophers. Hopefully these things begin to rub off on AP voters sooner rather than later.

The whole poll world is so messed up. Everyone is competing on a very unlevel playing field. So much changes over an off season and some teams are natural candidates to continue rising from the previous season while others follow up decline with poor recruiting or coaching changes in the preceding off season. All that goes out the window and the early season polls are so frustrating. Just slap up the same high rankings for a bunch of SEC teams and a smattering of other traditional powers and then watch as self fulfilling prophecies play out while other teams in power conferences need to win everything through three fourths of their season to be recognized.

It’s harder for Texas A&M to fall out of the rankings than it is for MN to enter them.

Joke poll - ND loses at home to Marshall and still ranked?????
Do they even disclose their methodology?
Seems like another marketing gimmick ala their FPI crapola

Wisconsin loses in an upset and they still garnered a #21 ranking.
People need to realize this poll factors in so many things that have little to do with current on the field production. They factor in last year for a few weeks into this season.

I don't understand everyone's angst about being ranked or not. No polls here matter. CFP is the only one anybody should care about.

In the end you are correct, the ONLY poll that matters is the CFP rankings which are not released for the first time on Tuesday, Nov 1.

I think the frustration for many fans is that most of these first few weeks of polls make little sense at times. I personally would drop almost every team that loses out of the top 25 and let them claw their way back in with each win. Minnesota has played two very poor teams so far, that being said, I love how they have destroyed both of those teams. If we manhandle Colorado with the same tone of our frost two weeks of opponents, I will be very pleased and optimistic heading into conference play. Go Gophers!

I’m sorry that you don’t understand, as you describe. Perhaps this will help: the polls do matter. Being in the top 25 means your team is included in the various highlight packages, newspaper reviews of how the top 25 fared, etc. That is in reference to the AP and coach polls. But even one-off polls like this matter (to a lesser degree). The more places your team appears, the more it is in the college football discussion. The more likely your team is on the radar of the people voting in the more impactful polls. And yes, the more your team appears before the committee members that do have a say in the CFP, which indeed matters the most.

Because one ranking matters the most, doesn’t mean the other polls, rankings, and power lists don’t matter at all. They all matter. How much any given poll matters depends on its visibility level and if it is being used to determine media coverage.

CFP > AP poll > ESPN FPI > Schnauzer’s Power Rankings

Fully agree. Plus it matters for recruiting. The top players want to go to the top schools, and rankings can be an influence.

Sure. Except, for example, Wisconsin has been in the polls for years and everyone here would agree the Gophers are on a level playing field with them. Outside of 2019 and the covid year, it's been since 2014 since the Gophers were in the AP poll. Did the polls make that much of a difference? I'll say no. A better coaching staff who recruited better did that.

I'm not saying you cant be irrationally in love with being ranked. Good for you. However, we can all see what a good football team is with or without needing a ranking.

Sounds like you already know this, but a few things I want to highlight.

Calling SP+ a poll isn't accurate. He's not trying to judge a team's resume. They aren't trying to judge whether a team deserves a playoff spot. That's not what SP+ is used for.

It's meant to be predictive. The goal of SP+ is to predict which teams will win which games. It can also be used to predict margin and over-under. It is pretty good at this and when it was first introduced, absolutely destroyed Vegas spreads. Vegas spreads have since adapted to more closely align with SP+ predictions (or SP+ just got worse; kinda hard to tell).

The overall numeric rating provided by SP+ is a team's predicted scoring margin against the "average" FBS team. In other words, the Gophers would be expected to beat the "average" FBS team by ~16 points. Right now the "average" FBS team is a team like Rutgers.

The offensive rating is how many points a team would be expected to score against the average FBS defense, and the defensive rating is how many points a team would be expected to surrender against the average FBS offense. In other words, the Gophers would be expected to score 31 points against an average defense (53rd best in the country) and would be expected to surrender 15 points to an average offense (8th best in the country).

On field performance is most of the calculation by week 4/5, but it also includes performance in recent years, recruiting rankings, and returning production. Those things are included because it made the formula more accurate. The goal is to predict the future. Not rank teams.

You could argue that the Gophers offense is currently underrated because it was so bad last year that it's dragging down the score this year, but since there's no way to put that into the formula, it will just have to get pulled up over time.

I'll be happy when you reach #10 halfway through the season!!

Polls should be forced to wait until after the 4th or 5th week of the season.

I am happy you beat Nebraska in Lincoln, that was spectacular.

Interesting that our offense is just ranked 53rd by SP+. I suspect last year's info is still weighted in fairly well.

Must be given that we are #1 in the NCAA in total offense after 2 games.
