Brutally honest, which I like. It's one thing when some fan or columnist says the team isn't mentally tough enough (which I did observe myself) but another thing to hear it confirmed by the coach. Pitino has a way of critiquing his players in public without it sounding like he's throwing them under the bus.
Agree, the "winning on the road" quote hit home with me as well. Pitino hit that one right on the head.
If I had to pick my #1 criticism of the program over the years (spanning many coaches, including Clem), it's that the Gophers rarely have the intestinal fortitude to win difficult true road games, heck, any road game for that matter. Would love to get the Gopher program to the point where we don't celebrate every road victory (myself included) like it's a significant accomplishment.
Clem always said you needed talent to win on the road, which is true. But when you lose close games - which the Gophs did this year both home and away - you have to take a hard look at your intestines.
Which would require sticking your head up your ....
